Paytm Beats Ola To Become India’s #1 Unicorn At $16 Billion Valuation; No Indian Unicorn In Top 10 Global List

Until 2019, India ranked 3^rd in the list of home to total number of unicorns, globally.

Now, in the newly updated Hurun Global Unicorns 2020 list, UK has pushed India to the 4^th position, securing #3.

This has much to do with the fact that the unicorn count in India has remained locked at 21, since October last year, while for UK, this number has risen by 11, with its new count to be 24.

India and its Unicorns

A Unicorn is a startup company with valuation of over $1 billion.

The top 6 unicorns in India, contributing to India’s ranking worldwide are:

• Paytm: World Rank-13
• OYO: World Rank-31
• Byju’s: World Rank-31
• Ola: World Rank-49
• Swiggy: World Rank-96
• Zomato: World Rank-96

There were also additions to this list since last year’s rankings. They are Lenskart, Zerodha, and FirstCry.

In India, Bengaluru is home to 8, while Gurugram to 6 unicorns.

Despite 3 New Additions, Why did India not #3 in the List?

Yes, since the last ranking in October 2019, India’s unicorn number has not shifted from the 21^st position, despite addition of 3 new unicorn entries in 2020.

Ideally, the count should have risen to 24.

However, companies like InMobi, Quikr and ShopClues, valuations fell from the $1-billion mark due to pandemic, thus pulling them out from the 2020 list.

40 Unicorns Founded by Indians outside India

It has also been founded that Indians outside of India have founded 40 unicorns, increasing the count of Indian unicorn founders to 61.

This year, Hurun recorded a list of 586 unicorns, including 92 new additions. 

Hurun also reported that the total valuation of all known unicorns globally came out to be $1.9 trillion, in this sector-wise order:
