In all the smartphones sold by Xiaomi under the brand names Mi and Redmi, Mi Browser comes bundled in, and is the default browser unless the user changes it.

Mi Browser Pro is the advanced version, available on Google Playstore and other app ecosystems.

Now, Mi Brower Pro has been banned by Govt, and thus, won’t be available for users to download.

How It Will Impact Users Of Poco, Mi, Redmi Smartphones?

As per experts, the banning of Mi Browser Pro will have negligible impact on the users of Xiaomi phones in India.

  1. Mi Browser, which is the default browser will not be impacted, and users can continue to use it, in case they are using it.
  2. Mi Browser Pro is an advanced browser, only available via downloads. Since it’s banned now, users wont be able to download it. And thus, they can always use other browsers like Chrome and Mozilla.

Navkendar Singh, Research Director, Devices and Ecosystem, India and South Asia, IDC said, “No it would not impact. No one buys a device in India because of browser or pre-installed apps.”

Tarun Pathak Associate Director, Counterpoint Research said, “We do not see a direct and immediate impact on Xiaomi devices, but it is critical for the company’s brand image. Xiaomi has been upfront and quite open about certain issues in the past so we assume a similar move for this development as well.”

Xiaomi is #1 smartphone brand in India with more than 30% market share, and sold 10 crore smartphones last year.

This is a developing story, and we will keep you updated, as more details come in.
