Indian Railways now has a remarkable feat to its name – the national transporter has the credit of constructing the world’s first electrified tunnel.

The work of this tunnel has been completed despite the critical situation that has been created due to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.

Indian Railways Builds The World’s First Electric Tunnel Between Mewat & Gurugram

The world’s first electrified tunnel will run between the Mewat & Gurugram district of Haryana. Also, it negotiates a steep gradient on the up and downhill slope of the Aravalli range.

The tunnel is one kilometer long, and its breaking ceremony was recently conducted by Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Ltd (DFCCIL) on the occasion of completing the caving work.

The tunnel of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) through the Aravalli mountain range is D-shaped and has a cross-sectional area of 150 square meters. It will accommodate double line with higher OHE (Over Head Equipment) which will help move double-stack containers on the WDFC.

As per the statement issued by the DFCCIL, this will be the first ever electrified rail tunnel that will help move double-stack containers. The statement also stated that the work has been finished within less than a year’s time.

One Of The Biggest Railway Tunnels In India

Also, as for the cross-sectional area, this tunnel will be one of the biggest railway tunnels in India as one end of the tunnel is near Rewari, called the Portal-1 or west portal. The other end of the tunnel is at Dadri, which is called Portal -2 or east portal.

The DFCCIL said in its statement, “Tunnelling work has been done systematically and in a planned manner from both the ends by deploying high-tech man and machinery. This is the reason behind completing the caving work in a record one-year time.”

The tunnel will have a double line electrified track for double stacks train movement, whereas, the dimension of the tunnel will be of 14.5 meters and 10.5 meter height in a straight portion. It will be 15 meter wide and 12.5 meter. The height meter will help provide extra clearance at the time of negotiating the curve.
