23,000 TCS Employees Asked To Work From Office; Hiring Of Non-TCS Experts Starts

As things have gradually started moving towards normalcy as the COVID-19 pandemic still has a grip over the world, India’s IT major, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is planning to commence its lateral hiring again. 

The company is also planning to bring back up to 5% employees into offices.

TCS Re-Starting Its Lateral Hiring!

The lateral hiring had been halted to the COVID-19 resultant lockdowns and delays in academic terms. 

TCS CEO Rajesh Gopinathan said, “We have decided to open up on the lateral hiring side and have started on boarding new associates into the TCS ecosystem.” TCS claims its plans of lateral hiring are due to the increasing demand.

TCS chief human resources officer Milind Lakkad says that the positions in the company  involving ‘strategic talent development’ are being filled. Consequently, over 4,500 positions in the company were filled even though there was no junior recruitment happening over the last quarter. He said, “Our learning intensity has gone up by nearly 25%.”

Since the on boarding has been delayed due to delays in the final year examinations, Lakkad explained, “It was extremely important for us to connect with fresher recruits during this period.”

Office Chale Hum?

Currently  TCS has only 1% workforce in offices across the globe. Although it is planning on bringing 5% workforce i.e around 23,000 employees into offices by the end of the month.

Lakkad said, “We are still very conservative in bringing people back to work. Our strategy varies according to the COVID situation in each country, in each city.” The company says it will employ a campus-specific approach to bring employees back to the office. 

This approach will also be in line with their 25/25 vision for 2025 which envisions 25% employees in offices spending 25% of their time in office. 

TCS COO N. Ganapathy Subramaniam during the first-quarter earnings call said, “The location-independent way of working is gaining traction. Our customers are quite comfortable integrating the remote workforce, using new collaborative technologies to get work done.”

Gopinathan believes that TCS road to recovery would be better as compared to that from the Global Financial Crisis (GFC). According to him, the recovery trajectory was one step ahead this time around due to early response and better coordination.
