With the COVID-19 pandemic and the resultant lockdown enforced by countries all over the globe, many Indian citizens have been stranded abroad and many people in India as well. In India, the commercial flights were suspended from March 25 due to the pandemic. 

To evacuate the stranded Indians, the Centre announced a mega mission, the ‘Vande Bharat Mission’ on May 6. The phase 4 of this mission began on July 3 with Air India, IndiGo and GoAir operating the repatriation flights.

Air India To Operate 170 Repatriation Flights in the Phase 4 of Vande Bharat Mission!

Under the phase 4 of the Vande Bharat Mission, Air India is operating 170 flights to countries including Canada, the US, the UK, Kenya, Sri Lanka, Philippines, Kyrgyzstan, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, Thailand, South Africa, Russia, Australia, Myanmar, Japan, Ukraine and Vietnam.

The Trump administration had imposed restrictions on Air India evacuating Indian citizens from the United States of America. On June 22, the US Department of Transportation wont allow Air India to operate chartered flights between India and the United States without its prior approval. However, on July 5 Air India announced 36 repatriation flights to the US.

The national carrier has also rolled out empty leg flights so that Indians can safely reach their home states. Although these domestic flights are only meant for passengers arriving and departing on the Air India Evacuation flights and not for domestic passengers. 

A document released on Air India’s website states that the Air India’s chartered flights are scheduled to be operated between July 3 and 20.

The document also reads, “Given the extraordinary situation due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the schedules are subject to change at short notice. Kindly bear with us and please do visit Air India website for latest updates.”

When Will the International Flights Resume?

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) tweeted on July 3, that it is extending the suspension of scheduled international passenger flights in the country till July 31, although this shall not apply to international all cargo operations and flights specifically approved by the DGCA. 

Although analyzing the pattern, this date might get postponed!
