In a statement, Ministry of IT said, “The Ministry of Information Technology, invoking it’s power under section 69A of the Information Technology Act read with the relevant provisions of the Information Technology (Procedure and Safeguards for Blocking of Access of Information by Public) Rules 2009 and in view of the emergent nature of threats has decided to block 59 apps since in view of information available they are engaged in activities which is prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order”.

As per the notification, Govt of India, and The Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-IN) has received several complaints and alerts regarding the misuse of TikTok and other apps.

What Happens Now?

TikTok was banned in April last year as well, and the reason was that this app was polluting the young mind.

However, the ban was lifted after few weeks.

Now, it seems that the ban is permanent, atleast till the Laddakh stand-off is resolved.

Since Govt has now banned TikTok, new users won’t be able to download it from Google Playstore and Apple Playstore.

And very soon, the existing access of TikTok will be stopped by the telecom operators.

In some cases, VPN can be used to access the content, but since it’s now banned in India, we don’t expect any Indian content there on TikTok.

We will keep you updated, as more details come in.
