In another case of fleecing huge sums from companies, four Ola drivers have been arrested in Bangalore for deceiving the the startup and robbing off lakhs of rupees from it, with the help of a fake location app technology.

What is the Case about?

The Central Crime Branch in Bangalore detected a cheating case by a group of four Ola drivers, who robbed off the startup of lakhs of rupees.

These four drivers, Ravi, Manu, Satish and Nagesh have been arrested.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Kuldeep Jain reported that the 4 drivers used a counterfeit location technology to book fake Ola cab trips so that they could earn more commission from them.

How did they Manage to Rob Ola?

These drivers used a counterfeit location application, called Mock Locations, which is a fake GPS app, to trick the app that they drove customers in reality using false map locations.

This app can be downloaded from Google Play Store. It generates fake phone location information.

The drivers involved in this scam downloaded the app and showed that that they have driven the Ola cab by showing false map locations.

It is not difficult to use the app. One can simply navigate the route on the map and on clicking ‘Go’, it allows all the applications on your phone to provide fake location.

Ola One step Ahead of them

Ola’s system took just three days to detect the fake rides. However, by then the drivers had already earned lakhs of rupees and had abandoned all the details and documents such as SIM card, vehicle registration cards and others.

They then reiterated the same procedure with a new set of SIM cards and other details to con the startup again.

These drivers purchased about 500 mobile phone SIM cards using counterfeit names, to trick the company. In fact, they even booked the cab themselves.

Police seized a laptop, printer, multiple cell phones, several identity cards, rubber stamps, SIM cards, documents, some stationery items, one Toyota Innova car, a red Maruti Swift and others.
