Shocking! JioMart Users Getting Rotten Vegetables, Late Deliveries & More Issues

When a Mumbai resident opened her JioMart delivery bag on June 2, she found caterpillars all over the okra and rotten brinjals she had ordered. Moreover her order had been delayed by several days, and only groceries worth Rs1,000 showed up from a total bill of over Rs3,000.

Last month, the Reliance Industries rolled out its online grocery delivery platform, JioMart after it received a massive investment from Facebook. The platform had also announced that electronic devices will be delivered as well. It was speculated to give tough competition to  Swiggy, Grofers, Big Basket and likes.

However, just 2 weeks after it went live in 200 cities and towns, it seems to have let down its early customers from across the country.

Users Complain About Rotting Vegetables And Expired Products Delivered By JioMart!

JioMart, a joint venture between RIL’s Reliance Retail and Reliance Jio, sells staples, beverages, fruits and vegetables, snacks and branded foods, dairy and bakery, personal care, home care and baby care products.

The customers took to Twitter to complain about the quality of service and products from JioMart. Complaints on Twitter have ranged from bad quality food and rotting vegetables to muddy items and delayed or cancelled deliveries. Some orders were prepaid but never delivered, although the app shows that it has been.

Despite several attempts, the customers have also complained of not being able to reach the customer service. One user complained of receiving expired products as well.

One customer told Quartz, “Vegetables are not that great even from a BigBasket at this time [given the Covid-19 lockdown] but they’re nowhere near this bad. Jio’s milk tetra packs were puffed and dirty like someone picked them up from the mud and put them directly in the bag.”

A quick glance at Twitter exhibits many such complaints against the grocery delivery platform.

Jio Falling Behind It’s Plans?

JioMart aims to act as the channel between the local kirana store and the end consumer, using JioMart with WhatsApp integrated into it unlike other online grocery platforms like BigBasket and Grofers.

With 400 million WhatsApp users in India and a kirana shop in every corner, the app was downloaded by many.

Initial reports however show that while the same technique as Reliance Jio to use lower prices to lure more customers may work, a bad customer experience also means that many may never return.

JioMart could alter the industry dynamics, but execution holds the key and there are challenges, according to brokerage firm Jefferies.

The Jefferies report stated that on average, JioMart offered a 15% discount on MRP, which was marginally lower than DMart and better than Amazon and Big Basket.

JioMart hasn’t been linked to WhatsApp yet, something which is expected to be done in the coming months. It is currently running a pilot in a few areas in Navi Mumbai.

With the bad customer service and its news on the internet, will the citizens opt for JioMart over other grocery delivery platforms henceforth? Only time will tell…
