Indian Facebook Users Can Now Transfer Photos Directly To Google Photos: How To Do It?
Remember a tool that Facebook introduced in December of 2019 for limited users for transferring photos and videos directly to Google Photos? Well now it is available globally.
Facebook said on June 4, Facebook’s photo transfer tool is now available globally half a year on from an initial rollout in Europe.

All About the New Facebook Tool!
Right now, users can only store photos on Google Photos. However, a Facebook spokesperson told The Verge in April that the “people will also be able to transfer photos to other companies that join the Data Transfer Program.”
That initiative was established in 2018 between Google, Facebook, Microsoft, and Twitter. It is designed to promote joint efforts around improved data sharing tools, both between the companies and for consumers.
Apple later joined the open-source effort, called the Data Transfer Project (DTP), in 2019. However, it’s unclear when Facebook will add support for other services.
While introducing the tool back in December, Facebook said, “For almost a decade, we’ve enabled people to download their information from Facebook. The photo transfer tool we’re starting to roll out today is based on code developed through our participation in the open-source Data Transfer Project and will first be available to people in Ireland, with worldwide availability planned for the first half of 2020.”
The post on the company’s blog read, “Update on June 4, 2020 at 9:00AM PT: The photo transfer tool is now available globally to everyone on Facebook.”
The tool was first made available in select parts of Africa, Asia Pacific, and Latin America last December which later expanded to the US and Canada in April, 2020.
The data portability feature enables users of Facebook to directly port a copy of their photos to Google’s photo storage service, ‘Google Photos’ via encrypted transfer, rather than needing to download and manually upload photos themselves. This reduces the hassle involved with switching to a rival service.
Here’s How to Use the New Data Transfer Tool on Facebook!
The company said that all data will be encrypted while the transfer process takes place. You would also have to fill in your account password for initiating the process.
- While logged into your Facebook account, click on the down arrow at the end of the upper menu bar and select ‘Settings’.
- Select the tab that reads ‘Your Facebook Information’.
- Click on ‘Transfer a copy of your Photos or Videos’.
