Vivo Beats Samsung To Become Second Largest Smartphone Seller In India, Xiaomi Leads

IDC released the reports of performance of the Indian smartphone market in the first quarter of 2020.

While almost all the top companies grew, Samsung is the only from the top list who lost market share. The Indian smartphone market continues to grow, and the Chinese leaders are growing stronger with every passing quarter. Xiaomi stands tall on the table, and remains steady on top.

Vivo Beats Samsung, Now Second Largest Smartphone Seller In India

Vivo Y series, Vivo U series and Vivo Z are among the most sold Vivo smartphones in India.

South Korean global conglomerate Samsung continues to shrink in the Indian smartphone market. While it leads the global market, Samsung experienced a sharp decline of 28.4% YoY in Q1 2020. Samsung now stands at three, and this is the lowest they have recorded in the past 5 years.

While the company tried to get back at the Chinese competition with budget Galaxy M series and Galaxy A series, it’s still a long ladder for Samsung to climb.

Realme, Oppo Takes Fourth And Fifth Spot Respectively

The fastest growing smartphone brand in India remains Realme. This quarter Realme got ahead of Oppo, it’s ex-main brand to emerge as the fourth largest smartphone seller in India. Realme shipped an estimated 4.3 million units in Q1 2020, and is now the most sought-after candidate to topple Samsung next.

Realme’s top-selling smartphones in the quarter include: Realme 5i, Realme 5S, Realme C2, Realme C3, and newly launched Realme 6.

Up next we have Oppo at number five. The BBK brand sub-brand is said to have shipped 3.4 million units.

Oppo experienced a 41% YoY growth with their latest Reno 3 and Oppo F15 being the top-selling models. Three of the five brands in the top 5 list are owned by BBK Electronics, the majority holder in Vivo, Oppo and Realme. The Chinese tech giant also owns OnePlus, which is the largest premium smartphone brand in India.

Indian Smartphone Market Continues To Grow As Global Market Declines

The Indian smartphone market is growing strong and remains persistent with the numbers while the global smartphone market is facing a decline. The Indian market recorded a positive growth with an estimated overall shipments of 32.4 million in the first quarter of 2020.

Amid lockdown and almost no sales in the last few weeks, India still experienced a growth of 1.5% YoY.

If compared to other large global smartphone markets, both China and the US have seen a 20.3% and 16.0% Year-on-Year decline respectively.

The Indian market also saw a big jump in online smartphone sales. The online sales have increased by 9.0% YoY in the first quarter of 2020. Not only sales, the online purchases also saw a big share in the overall sales. Online smartphone sales now take up 43.1% of the market share.

The offline sales declined by 3.5% YoY, which indicates more people are now purchasing smartphones online, and the e-commerce penetration in the tier II and tier III cities is happening rapidly.

Finally, the largest feature phone market saw a steep decline. The features phone sales in India came down by 29.4% in the first quarter, which also hints at people going for a smartphone over a feature phone. Feature phones sales in India is now an estimated 22.8 million units in Q1 2020.
