Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, offices had to shift to the ‘work from home’ regime. The lockdown is known to cut off by May 3, until of course it isn’t extended.
However, we have got some news from Gurugram that multinational companies, business process outsourcing (BPO) firms and IT-enabled services (ITeS) providers may have to extend the work from home format of work until July.
WHM Extended in Gurugram?
Gurugram metropolitan authority CEO and Haryana additional chief secretary V.S. Kundu is in charge of handling Covid-19 for Gurugram district.
Kundu informed the PTI that as of now, it appears as though the advisory for work from home will continue till the end of July. All those who have offices in Gurgaon should continue to work from home to the extent possible.
He also added that this WHM could not be possible in the case of industries and the manufacturing sector, but should be followed wherever possible.
The suggestion comes after the Union home ministry revised its guidelines on 15 April and allowed IT and ITeS companies to work from office with up to 50% staff strength from 21 April.
Kundu has clarified that there isn’t any such official advisory released for extension of WHM for these industries. It is his personal opinion.
He also said that the directions of the Central government and state government will be meticulously followed in Gurugram.
Gurugram: The Millenium City
Gurugram is home to tech giants, including Infosys, Google, Facebook and Microsoft, as well as BPO firms like Genpact and Convergys, which work 24/7 serving clients across geographies including the US, Europe and Australia.
Kundu said few construction sites at GMDA and NHAI projects have been allowed to resume work within the norms of social distancing.
According to a survey, 74% of companies surveyed planned to permanently shift to more remote work even after the crisis is over.
Haryana began the state-wide lockdown on 22 March, three days before the nationwide lockdown. The state has reported 296 cases and three deaths. With 51 people testing positive, Gurugram has the second highest number of covid-19 cases in the state, after Nuh.
