Phone Companies Warn Of Network Breakdown In COVID-19 Hotspots

Phone companies have handed out warnings of an inevitable breakdown in the telecom services in the COVID-19 hotspots because their emergency teams have been blocked by local authorities.

The companies have sought for urgent intervention of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to make sure their teams can operate freely and ensure uninterrupted mobile and internet connectivity in the areas where COVID-19 has hit severely.

Rajan Mathews, the director general of Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) has written a letter to the telecom secretary Anshu Prakash, wherein, he states that there could be a breakdown of mobile and internet connectivity if telco technicians are forbidden from reaching the telecom sites in the COVID-19 hotspots.

Situation Getting Worse In Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, And Maharashtra

In the letter, he said, “Telecom has been recognised as an essential service in various government orders, but curfew-like restrictions are being imposed by various state governments in areas sealed off as Covid-19 hotspots where no movement of telecom services personnel is being allowed, which can lead to a complete breakdown in services.”

Reliance Jio Infocomm, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea are the telecom operators that are represented by the COAI

As per reports, the situation is extremely challenging in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra, where numerous locations have been labeled as COVID-19 hotspots. Also, the COAI has asked the telecom secretary to “monitor developments and issue instructions to the concerned state governments to allow movement of staff of telcos, tower infrastructure service providers, fibre optic providers and (vendor) partners to ensure fault repair and maintenance work.”
