Doordarshan has now become the most-watched channel, thanks to the old shows being broadcasted again, such as Shaktimaan, Byomkesh Bakshi, etc.

The classic old Doordarshan shows are being replayed again, boosting Doordarshan’s popularity and the channel which wasn’t even in the top ten most viewed channels has jumped to be the topmost viewed channel in the past couple of weeks.

Even Ramayana, that started playing on Doordarshan recently has topped the charts and become the highest watched TV shows ever

Doordarshan Becomes Topmost Viewed Channel In The Past Week

There was a time when Doordarshan was the only channel broadcasted on TV. As more channels were introduced, Doordarshan gradually began to disappear, but it probably stayed somewhere at the back of our minds.

However, the Coronavirus pandemic has turned the tables for Doordarshan, which has regained its old glory now. Due to the pandemic, the broadcaster started showing old and popular shows again, for the public. 

Doordarshan wasn’t even the top-10 most-viewed channels in the Hindi General Entertainment Channel (GEC) category, and in just the previous week (21-27 March) the channel went up to the topmost viewed channels.

Shashi Shekhar Vempati, head of Doordarshan’s parent Prasar Bharati tweeted, “A Big Thank You to all the viewers of Doordarshan – per @BARCIndia the most viewed channel during week 13 is @DDNational across India. With your support Public Broadcaster has helped India Stay Home, Stay Safe as we fight back #COVID-19 pandemic.”

Shaktimaan, Ramayana, Byomkesh Bakshi Help Boost Doordarshan’s Viewership

As per the data released by Broadcast Audience Research Council-Nielsen, the viewership of DD National went up to 580 million impressions during the 9 am-10.30 am slot in week 13 (28 March to 3 April). As per reports, this was only one million impressions in the previous week.

After DD National, Sun TV and Dangal came in second and third place.

The viewership of Ramayana increased by 454 times in the morning and evening slots together. Shaktimaan, the popular series with the Indian version of Superman, increased as much as 52-fold to 20.8 million impressions.

Byomkesh Bakshi, the Indian Sherlock has also made up for an 11 percent jump, and Buniyaad, Dekh Bhai Dekh, Circus have given an eight-fold boost.
