Availability Of Essential Goods Rises By 50-70% In Online And Offline Stores

The lockdown due to coronavirus has resulted in a huge deficit of daily necessities, but online and offline platforms both have reported a good improvement in the availability of the essential goods and services.

This has been confirmed by a report released by community platform LocalCircles as well. Apparently, this has happened due to the improvement in the inter-state movement of goods and the availability of workers in the field. The availability of essential goods has improved to 70% in offline stores and 53% in offline stores.

The report, LocalCircles, has been derived from a survey conducted in collaboration with the Department of Consumer Affairs.

The report also revealed that the same availability of essential products was at 57% in offline stores and 39% on the online platforms on March 25 and March 26, which were the first two days of the national lockdown that was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The report states, “For both retailers and ecommerce platforms, finding workers for warehousing, store operations as well as delivery continues to be a challenge, negatively impacting their capacity and ability to service consumers.”

Workers Unable To Work Elsewhere To Be Employed In Online Delivery Platforms

It also talks about a solution, which must be found by the platforms that have support from industry associations so that workers that are currently not working may be employed here.

Rohit Sharma, Head of Supply Chain at Grofers said, “Operations have become smoother from last week, we have been able to resume deliveries in 24 cities with 70% warehouse staff. We are also getting support from the authorities and police administration for the seamless delivery of essentials to customers.”

As per reports, BigBasket and Grofers have also been operating at 50-60% capacity considering the shortage of labour. BigBasket also reported to be looking to hire 10,000 additional workers and Grofers is planning to hire about 2000 workers.
