Two very crucial updates have just been received, related with coronavirus outbreak, and Railways in India.

100% Refund For Cancelled Train Tickets

Indian Railways has announced 100% refund for canceled train tickets: This covers those trains which have been canceled by Indian Railways, as well as those trains which are running, but the passenger is not able to travel.

This 100% refund will be applicable for those tickets, whose train journey falls between March 21 to April 21.

Besides, the passengers of these cancelled tickets can claim refund even after 45 days of the journey, as a convenience for them. Generally, 72 hours deadline is provided for getting refunds from cancelled tickets, over the counter. 

As per some reports, this 100% refund for cancelled tickets is only applicable for counter tickets, and not online bookings. We are awaiting more details.

Besides, passengers can also cancel their tickets by calling 139. Refund will be processed within 30 days for such cases.

Due to the ongoing Janta Curfew, Indian Railways has already canceled 3700 trains, across India. More than 60% of all booked tickets have been cancelled, due to coronavirus impact.

Mumbai Shuts Down Local Trains

In an unprecedented move, Mumbai has decided to shut down their local trains service, to stop the spread of coronavirus. 

This shutdown of Mumbai local will be effective midnight of March 22, 2020.

Three types of exceptions exist for this shutdown:

  • Passengers who are delivering essential products, and/or working in the jobs under essential commodities can travel
  • Passengers who need urgent medical care
  • Passengers who need to board a long distance train at any one of the Railway terminals

Police will check ID cards of these passengers, who wish to travel via local during this period.
