Due to the impact of coronavirus, less and less people are going out (thankfully), and opting for online shopping.

And this includes grocery items as well. This is the main reason why orders of Grofers and Big Basket has witnessed a massive surge of 80% since last few days.

And in the US, which is has been severely impacted due to coronavirus, Amazon has decided to hire 100,000 new workers to cope with the demand. They will also get higher salary.

Will Amazon hire more people in India as well?

Big Basket, Grofers Witness 80% More Orders

As per reports coming in, both Big Basket and Grofers have witnessed a surge in orders: Both the volume of orders, and the size of orders have increased.

While Big Basket reported 15-20% increase in the value of each orders, Grofers reported upto 80% increase in volume.

Infact, previously, Grofers had processed the maximum amount of Rs 24,000 via single order. In the last 4 days, they have processed a single order worth Rs 52,000, which has broken their own record.

This clearly showcase that customers are hoarding essential items, and as per Grofers, they are discouraging this practice. Govt has ruled that hand sanitizers and masks have been declared as essential items, and anyone hoarding these can face action.

As per another report, Delhi and Hyderabad have been #1, when it comes to surge in orders of FMCG products and hand sanitizers.

Amazon Will Hire 100,000 Workers

In the US, as the spread of coronavirus increases and entire cities are being locked down, there is a massive surge in online orders.

In order to cope with this new demand, Amazon has announced that they will hire 100,000 more workers. Besides, their hourly pay will also increase by $2. Instead of $15/hr, every hourly worker will be now paid $17.

Amazon will spend $350 million in order to pay this extra hourly wage.

Amazon employes almost 8 lakh employees as of now. 

Infact, not only Amazon, but other retailers are also ramping up staff to meet the new demand. 

US supermarket chains Albertsons, Kroger and Raley’s have already started recruiting staff from travel and hospitality industry, since their jobs have reduced after coronavirus outbreak.
