Pakistani Techies Earn More Than Indian Techies; Americans Earn 3X More Than Indians Coders!

A 2020 HackerRank Developer Skills Report reads, software developers in the US make almost 3x more than their Indian counterparts.

The Report is based on responses from 116,648 developers and students. The majority of the people surveyed by HackerRank were likely to be industry veterans and experienced developers.

Indian Developers Earning Much Less Than Global Average Salary!

According to the report, the average salary for Indian developers is $38,229 per year a little over Rs 27 lakh. Whereas the developers in the US earn $109,167 per year (a little over Rs 80 lakh per year) with developers in cities like San Francisco and Seattle earning considerably more than developers in other US cities.

Surprisingly and interestingly, the survey finds that even the developers in Pakistan with their average annual salary of $39,154 earn a bit more than what Indian professionals earn.

Around the globe, a developer makes $54,491 (Rs 40 lakh approx) on average, with developers in countries like the US, Australia, Canada and Netherlands making significantly more money than the developers in Asian countries.

Though according to the global average salaries Indian developers can be seen earning less, but when seen in Indian context the developer salaries are quite good. 

It should be noted that the above mentioned salaries are those of people at a higher position in the industry. At entry level the salaries are expected to be lower.

Other Interesting Statistics Stated in the HackerRank Developer Skills Report!

The report also states the skills that are in demand and what skills affect the pay scale for developers. According to the report, Perl is the programming language which is mostly associated with above average pay. A professional knowledge of Perl makes a developer earn 54% more than an average developer.

Developers get a hint of what their peers earn through websites like LinkedIn and Glassdoor. For every employee with a big paycheck, there are also employees who feel they are underpaid. The report states that 39% of the developers around the world feel they are not paid fairly, 35% feel they are paid fairly and 26% are not sure. 

Educational qualification does not seem to be a priority for many companies when it comes to hiring developers. While tech bigwigs like Google, Apple, and IBM do not give importance to 4-year degree requirements anymore, the small companies have not set criteria for degrees at all. The report says that 32% of developers at small companies do not have a bachelor’s degree.

The report also states that the most important way to professionally grow in the field could be by learning new technical skills. Around 59% of the employees expressed their desire to learn new technical skills. The report reconfirms the notion that developers like to stick to technical work. Product focus, as they call it. Around 62% want to be tech leads and only a limited number of developers of 15% wanted to be managers.

The report also covers statistics running tangential to the developer industry. The report states 3% who never want to take a break and who want to work all the time need to engage in recreational activities. Furthermore,  61% developers listen to music when they do not code.
