Maruti Stops Making Diesel Versions Of Dzire, Swift, Baleno

Since the last several years, Maruti Suzuki has been producing the diesel variant of Dzire, Swift, Baleno in India using the Fiat-sourced 1.3 liter DDiS diesel.

This is a powerful, and reliable engine. Its output has been benchmarked at 74 bhp at 4,000 rpm and 190 Nm of peak torque delivered at 2,000 rpm.

This engine was configured with five-speed manual or a five-speed AMT transmission for Dzire, Swift, Baleno models.

But since April 2019, Maruti has been extensively focussing on making and selling BSVI complaint cars, and right now, they are #1 car manufacturers in India to sell BSVI complaint cars, both petrol and diesel.

Hence, this is the reason that Maruti Suzuki has now decided to completely stop making diesel versions of Dzire, Swift, Baleno using Fiat engines.

So, what next?

Maruti Focusing On BSVI Complaint Cars

Now, as per a report by GaadiWaadi, Maruti Suzuki is focusing extensively on making CNG and Hybrid based cars, which shall be BSVI complaint.

This is the reason, Maruti Suzuki has now entirely stopped the production of diesel version of their best sellers.

For instance, right now, Swift is powered by a BSVI compliant 1.2-litre petrol engine which gives an output of 82 bhp at 6,000 rpm and 113 Nm at 4,200 rpm.

The same engine is being used for Dzire compact sedan and the Baleno premium hatchback as well.

Besides, a hybrid version of Swift, which is being sold in Japan, was showcased at the recently concluded AutoExpo 2020.

This means that this hybrid model will be launched in India, very soon.

Maruti also wants to explore possibilities with their next gen 1.2-litre DualJet petrol engine, which is right now powering Baleno.

Some of the features this new engine has:

  • Electronic Stability Program with Hill Hold
  • Cruise control
  • Latest SmartPlay touchscreen infotainment system with cloud-based functions
  • Apple CarPlay
  • Android Auto connectivity
  • Bigger brakes
  • Coloured TFI multi-info display and more.

We will keep you updated, as more details come in.
