Tata Sky Reduces Tariff Based On New Cable TV Rules; DTH, Cable Operators Rebel Against TRAI Over Premium Channels

It’s Tata Sky that has taken the lead in slashing the prices of the television channels, as ordered by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India.

As we all know, March 1st was the deadline given by TRAI for the NTO 2.0 that was announced recently. In this, TRAI has decided to reduce the cap on the pricings of the individual channels. This was met with a lot of resistance from the telecom operators, what with all the court cases and hearings, but it seems as though they have let go now.

What are the changes in the television channel rates by Tata Sky? Let’s find out!

Tata Sky First To Slash Prices Of Television As Per New Order By TRAI

As of now, Tata Sky, television service from the Tata Group, is the first and the only one to announce such a reduction in prices of television channels. If you are a customer of Tata Sky, you will notice the changes once you log in to the portal of the operator.

Previously, the rules dictated that if anyone had activated more than 70 channels of their own choice, they would have to pay an additional charge of Rs. 150, and the taxes as well. Also, the charges went up by Rs. 20 plus taxes for every 25 additional channels.

So what is the new change? Your network charges will remain permanent at Rs. 130 plus tax, up to a channel limit of 200, after which, you will have to pay Rs. 30 plus tax.

TRAI Introduces NTO 2.0; Broadcasters And DTH Operators Unhappy

The amended tariff order states that no matter how many channels you select, you will be charged only Rs. 160 plus tax, be it any television operator. Also, the cap on the channel price has been reduced to Rs. 12 only, which was previously Rs. 19. No wonder the telecom operators were unhappy with this!

As per reports, Tata Sky will be removing most of the existing channel packs from its self care portal, which includes channel packs such as Zee, Star, Sony, Sun, TV18, and Tata’s specially designed base packs too.

Also, broadcasters like Zee, Star, etc. have put their foot down and are not coming up with any other optional packages to replace the old ones. Whereas, the Tata Sky, Dish TV, Airtel Digital are working at introducing new packages for the customers, and we believe, their packages might come soon!
