Born in 2002, the brandname ‘Idea’ has been killed for all postpaid users of Vodafone-Idea.

From now on, every postpaid user of Idea Cellular would be branded under Vodafone Red postpaid plans, and would be called as Vodafone postpaid users.

Prepaid users of Idea Cellular will be kept under Idea brand-name itself.

Vodafone Drops Idea Brandname For Postpaid Users

As per a company statement coming in, all existing Idea postpaid users will be directly enrolled into the Vodafone Red postpaid plans, based on the existing usage, plan selected and payments made.

The equivalent plans of Vodafone Red will be automatically selected for Idea postpaid user now.

Users of Idea Nirvana, which was a special postpaid umbrella under Idea will also be transferred to Vodafone Red plans.

Besides, all new postpaid customers of Vodafone and Idea, both will be categorized under Vodafone Red postpaid plans.

The statement said, “While all new postpaid customers will be on-boarded directly to Vodafone RED plans as per their usage and preference, all existing customers of Idea Nirvana, the postpaid offering under the Idea brand, will be migrated to similar Vodafone RED plans,” 

This transition will kickstart from Mumbai, and then gradually cover entire India.

At the same time, the company said, “Prepaid products will continue to be offered under both Vodafone and Idea brands nationally across all circles via respective retail and digital channels enabling customers to enjoy a rich portfolio of services and benefits under their preferred brand,” 

Brief History Of Idea Cellular

The journey of Idea Cellular started in 1995, when Birla Group acquired telecom licenses for Gujarat and Maharashtra. No brand name was decided at that time, and in 1996, the telecommunication company was christened as Birla Communication Ltd.

Later, a joint venture of Grasim Industries and AT&T was formed, which resulted in changing the name to Birla AT&T Communications Ltd.

In 1997, their telecom operations started, and in 2001, it merged with Tata Cellular Services.

In 2002, the brand name Idea Cellular was born, even as the company expanded into Delhi, Andhra and other circles/

In 2006, Idea became the 1st telco to provide EDGE services, which introduced the concept of 3G in India.

In 2018, Vodafone acquired Idea, thereby creating India’s biggest telecom operator, a position which they lost to Jio recently.
