Duping people for money through digital as well as social media has been on the rise as the internet has gone popular, and mainstream.

It has become a common sight for us to receive a mail claiming they will award you a huge sum of money or getting a fake call asking the customer to give his/her credit card details, which are confidential and private. Many people have fallen prey to many such internet fraud incidents.

What Is Internet Fraud?

As described by the Sage Encyclopedia of the Internet, Internet fraud is a type of fraud or deception which makes use of the Internet and could involve hiding of information or providing incorrect information for the purpose of tricking victims out of money, property, and inheritance.

It’s not a single crime as it covers a variety of illegal and illicit actions that are committed in cyberspace. Section 420 in the Indian Penal Code deals with Cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property. The maximum punishment which can be awarded is imprisonment for a term of 7 year and fine.

This Is How Bengaluru Woman Was Robbed Of Rs 63,900

A 35-year old woman working in the IT sector of Bengaluru was no survivor of such fraud schemes. The techie was duped of a huge chunk of her money after clicking on a link sent by the caller.

The victim was searching for a courier service contact number when she came across customer care claiming themselves as FedEx couriers. The IT professional had to send a courier to her husband on Thursday who lives in Canada.

When she called the customer service, the fraudster asked her to follow a list of instructions.  Upon clicking on a sent link she got re-directed to a payment app. After which, the money got deducted from her in six installments.

How To Avoid Internet Frauds?

  1. Do not share account information like cvv, otp, expiry date, etc with anyone. No bank employee or online payment app employee is authorized to ask such information.
  2. While searching on various search engines and social media portals, don’t fall prey to unofficial and unauthorized claims and offers. Some of them can lead you to a fraud.
  3. Do not pick up calls from unidentified numbers claiming to be bank or online payment app.
  4. Do not enter UPI pin or pay money when you are receiving money.
  5. Do not install third party apps like Screenshare, Teamviewer, etc
