One Standard Charging Port For All Smartphones In The World? Europe Is Initiating A New Revolution For All!

There have been a lot of modifications and developments in charging ports of phones over time, each one different than the previous one. And now, demand has been made by the European lawmakers to design and build a charging port that will be common for every smartphone available in the market.

Will this demand be met my smartphone and electronics manufacturers? Let’s find out!

European Lawmakers Demand For A Common Charging Port For Each Smartphone

As per reports, European lawmakers have demanded that there be a common charging port for each of the smartphone available in the market. This common charging port will be extended to all portable devices, such as smartphones, e-readers, tablets, and the rest.

In 2014, the Radio Equipment Directive of the European Union had also proposed the development of a common charging port, but that didn’t happen because there was a shortage of co-legislatures.

The primary reason behind this is that it will reduce the generation of electronic waste on a high scale. Additionally, this will also make charging the devices for electronics users a lot easier.

Apple Opposes Same Charging Point For All Smartphones; Says It Will Increase E-Waste

The European Union had made an assessment, ‘Standard charger for mobile phones: Inception Impact Assessment (2018)’ wherein it said that the policies of the electronic waste reduction are not being followed completely. Majority of customers use Apple Lightning, USB 2.0 Micro B and USB Type C, as of today.

Apple had also responded to this report a year ago that a common charger for all smartphones is not good for the environment, and it will hinder the enhancements in technology instead of encouraging it.

Around a billion Apple devices use the lightning port, and according to Apple, a common charger would increase electronic waste greatly, won’t be of much convenience to customers, and thus proving the actual purpose useless.

As per reports, Apple is planning to phase out the Lightning connector and introduce the Type C USB port in the latest iPhone 12 series, which has already been introduced in the iPad and MacBook.
