This Startup Is Offering Free WiFi Using Lasers In Bengaluru; Plans Start From Rs 2/Day For 20 GBPS Speed!

Soon enough, there will be free wifi in the whole of Bengaluru! Yes, that’s correct – this free wifi in the silicon valley of India is the courtesy of a startup, which is only three years old, named Wifi Dabba.

Here’s what is most interesting about the wifi – that it will be powered by lasers, instead of the usual wireless waves.

Free WiFi Using Lasers?

Wifi Dabba is a startup founded by Shubhendu Sharma and Karam Lakshman in 2016. Back then, they took their first step when they gave a paid public WiFi at tea stalls and paan shops as well. They gave 200 MB data for only Rs. 2, which lasted for 24 hours. As technology advanced, the company started offering 1 GB data for Rs. 2. 

In 2018, Wifi Dabba also conducted a test of a free-internet model which supported ads. This model enabled users to access the internet after watching an ad after every 45 minutes. Wifi Dabba has also offered wifi over 10,000 co-living spaces in Bengaluru.

Shubhendu Sharma, Founder and COO of Wifi Dabba says, “We aim to lower the cost of internet to make easy accessibility possible for the next billion internet users.”

Rs 2/Day Plan For 20 GBPS Speed

Wifi Dabba has made use of a mesh network in an area of Hubli with high population, and this plan has offered internet services for about half a million users in about three months. 

The startup aims to use supernodes throughout Bengaluru, and offer Wifi connections to homes, retails and enterprises by 2020. Supernodes is a technology that Wifi Dabba is working on, and it offers laser-based mesh. These lasers are eye-safe and they can throughput internet up to 100 GB per second speed. This will be available for 20 km radius distance, and there will be no need for fibre whatsoever.

This plan is currently in place in Bengaluru, and it will soon be available throughout the nation as well. 

Shubhendu says, “Home and retails will get a Wifi Dabba Giga router which will connect to the supernode.”

Shubhendu has also said that the ad-based model will be retired and in its place will be a simple puzzle, or captcha codes, etc. There will also be uninterrupted connections at the price of Rs. 1.20 per GB.
