Xiaomi Will Become 1st To Use Made In India GPS NaVIK In Phones; ISRO-Xiaomi Talks Are On!

As per the reports from official, the Indian Space Research Organisation and Chinese mobile manufacturer Xiaomi are in advanced stage of talks on the provision of chipsets that can support NaVIC, the Indian version of Global Positioning System (GPS) on Wednesday.

How Did This Happen?

The ISRO and mobile major Xiaomi are in advanced talks on the provision of chipsets that can support NaVIC, the Indian version of Global Positioning System (GPS).

With this initiative, the Chinese smartphone maker is likely to emerge as the first company to use chips supporting NavIC.

Also, it is likely to use the NavIC-friendly chipset that is being manufactured by the US chip manufacturer Qualcomm.

As ISRO has stated earlier, the NavIC-friendly chipset, which is being manufactured by the US chip manufacturer Qualcomm, is designed to provide accurate position information service to users in India as well as the region extending up to 1500 km from its boundary, which is its primary service area.

According to ISRO official “Qualcomm has announced that its chip is going to have NaVIC and they are releasing it. Now almost Xiaomi is in agreement to have it. Xiaomi may launch its mobile phones with NavIC chipsets,”.

What Is NavIC And How Does It Work?

NavIC is actually the abbreviation of the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS).

The IRNSS was developed for terrestrial, aerial and marine navigation, disaster management, vehicle tracking and fleet management and integration with mobile phones as per the ISRO official.

Its basic purpose is to provide Standard Positioning Service (SPS) to all users and Restricted Service (RS), which is an encrypted service for only authorized users.

It is expected that IRNSS would be able to provide a position accuracy of better than 20 metre in the primary service area.

The international body 3GPP has formally approved usage of NavIC, allowing the ISRO to collaborate with Qualcomm according to ISRO officials.

What Are Other Developments In ISRO?

The other reports coming in about the four pilots from the Indian Air Force (IAF), they will leave for Russia this month to receive training as astronauts of Gaganyaan, the first Indian crewed flight to space.

They were shortlisted after a series of fitness and endurance tests, ISRO Chairman K. Sivan informed at a press meet on Wednesday.

Gaganyaan is the ?10,000-crore Indian human space flight scheduled for 2022 that was announced by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi in August 2018.

As per the reports, it is designed to have 3-7 crew members spend 3-7 days in space in a 400-km orbit.

Dr. Sivan said that the first of the two pre-Gaganyaan flights with a humanoid will be launched this year-end along with some of the six shortlisted micro-gravity experiments.

He said “The government has approved Chandrayaan-3. The work on it is going on smoothly. It may need roughly 14-16 months of work prior to launch,”.
