2018-19 Was Safest Year For Indian Railways Ever!
This is indeed a big, massive achievement for Indian Railways: In 2018-19, there were zero accident deaths of passengers, thereby becoming the safest year for Indian Railways.
This is for the time in the last 166 years that zero accident deaths were reported by Indian Railways.
Accidents Reduce By 95%
If we talk about consequential accidents, which includes collisions, fire in trains, level crossing accidents and derailment, then there has been a whooping 95% reduction since last 38 years.
In the year 2017-18, there were total of 73 rail accidents, which reduced to 59 in 2018-19.
Percentage wise too, there has been massive reduction in accidents: Accidents per million kilometres has now reduced to an all-time low of 0.06 in 2018-19, which again makes it the safest year for Indian Railways.
Train Accidents: Historical Perspective
Over the years, train accidents have drastically reduced, thereby making train journey even more safe and secured for all passengers.
In the year 1960-61 there was total of 2,131 train accidents.
By 1970-71, train accidents were reduced to 840.
By 1980-81, total of 1,013 train accidents were reported.
In 1990-91, total of 532 train accidents were reported/
By 2010-11 train accidents reduced to 141 cases, which has now come down to 59.
Between 1990-1995, there were 500 train accidents, which resulted in 2,400 deaths and 4,300 injuries.
Between 2013-2018, on an average, 110 accidents happened every year, wherein 990 passengers died, and 1500 were injured.
