Who Is Leading The Game?

Amazon is ahead in the final placements happening at the National Institutes of Technology (NITs) While Walmart-owned Flipkart following closely.

Amazon is also leading in summer placement offers at the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and the institution also expects that this trend will continue for the finals as well.

From the past three years, Amazon has been increasing offers at IIM Ahmedabad.

Amit Karna chairperson of the placement committee at IIM Ahmedabad said “We expect that the demand for talent by top eCommerce companies would only go up as they are penetrating more small towns and cities. They would need more talent, especially from premium management schools,”.

What About Flipkart?

On the other hand, Flipkart has also informed that they are also willing to hire interns from the top 22 B-schools.

“We continue to hire across business and product roles through campus hiring,” the company said.

Karna added “This year would truly reflect Walmart’s buying into Flipkart. As a result, we expect more offers being made in the finals,”.

While Amazon kept quiet on the queries.

As per the reports, the eCommerce marketplace is the top recruiter at the NITs, which includes Jalandhar, Trichy, Calicut and Malviya NIT, Jaipur.

Companies like Microsoft, DE Shaw and General Electric (GE) along with Amazon was day 1 recruiter at NIT Trichy this year.

Amazon and Flipkart are ahead of other companies in the case of IIMs, where summer placements are almost over.

What Kind Of Opportunities These Companies Are Offering?

As per the information given by the IIM placement cells, the eCommerce companies are looking to fill roles in new business and operations in addition to those they have been offering.

According to Abhishek Goel, the chairperson, career development and placement convener, IIM Calcutta “Discussions this year are mostly around hiring talent for business oriented roles with the major eCommerce companies as opposed to hiring for tech roles in the past,”.

There has been a shift of trends as until last year, eCommerce companies had hired for tech roles, especially emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), big data, internet of things (IoT) and machine learning (ML).

For the upcoming final placements, both the eCommerce rivals are also visiting the Calcutta and Kozhikode IIMs apart from Management Development Institute (MDI), Gurgaon and Faculty of Management Studies (FMS), Delhi.

What Is The Process For Hiring?

The Shovan Chowdhary, chairperson of the placement committee at IIM Kozhikode said that “There has been a 75% increase in offers for summer internship from the eCommerce sector mainly due to these two companies,”. (reference)

These companies are shortlisting and recruiting students from campuses on the basis of their performance during internships.

In the past years, Amazon has given more offers than Flipkart across all three kinds of placements including lateral, final and summer across all campuses.

Shovan mentioned that “this year, Flipkart is willing to offer more roles,”.

At MDI’s summer placements, Digital payment solution provider PhonePe and Amazon made their debut this year.

Giving more information about the subject Kanwal Kapil, the dean of placements at MDI said that “We had initiated a relationship with Amazon during final placements 2019 with one offer in the HR domain,”.
