China Imposes Curfew On People Playing Video Games; How Does This Rule Work?

The government of China has imposed a curfew that goes: Anyone who is under the age of 18 will now not be allowed to play online games between 10 pm to 8 am. Also, they will be restricted to play 90 minutes a day, up to 3 hours on weekends and public holidays.

The government has also said that there will be a limit on how much people can spend on games. Children under the age of eight years will not be able to pay for playing, and those between 8 to 16 years of age will be allowed to spend about 200 yuan (£22) per month, and those between 16 to 18 will be allowed to spend 400 yuan (£45).

A Government spokesperson said, “to help minors establish correct online game consumption concepts and behaviour habits.”

Authorities have stated that players will have to register with their real names and state identification number. This way, the government will be able to impose the rules easily. However, Beijing is of the opinion that such management of gaming will require cooperation from online gaming mediums, parents and schools as well.

This rule covers any online games that are played via computers, mobiles, tablets as these gadgets have begun replacing the traditional video game consoles such as Nintendo, PlayStation and Xbox. If gaming providers do not agree with this, their business licenses will be revoked.

Reactions From People In China

This has invoked multiple mixed reactions from the public of China, some in support, while some protesting the curfew. While one user said, “It’s very necessary! It would be harmful for children’s health if they stay up too late.”

Whereas there are people who are arguing against the rule, saying, “What’s the problem with 16-year-olds playing some game after school at 10pm? Or are we supposed to do maths all the time?”
