Netflix’s Show On Hindu Gods Coming Soon; Amazon, Netflix, Hotstar, AltBalaji Uncensored As Per RTI
In the last few months, Netflix has faced backlash and hatred due to their shows portraying Hinduism in allegedly ‘bad light’.
Talks about censorship and regulating OTTs such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, and others have also been initiated, and the reason has been the vulgar content.
Now, two very interesting developments have taken place:
- Netflix is about to launch a web series on Hindu deities and Gods, called ‘Ghee Happy’, whose target audience are kids.
- As per an RTI filed, Govt. is not regulating or censoring any digital content, shown in any video streaming app.
What does this mean?
Netflix’s New Show On Hindu Gods
Sanjay Patel, who directed Oscar nominated movie ‘Sanjay’s Superteam’ for best animation, is now directing a new series for Netflix.
This will be based on Hindu Gods, and is named ‘Ghee Happy’.
The show will revolve around three Hindu Gods: Ganesha, Saraswati and Kali, who attend a pre-school/ day care as little kids, and then gradually discover their superpowers.
As per the reports coming in, Netflix has asked Sanjay to travel to India, and know more about the culture and tradition of Hindu Gods, in order to create this new and unique series.
The producers of this show, and Sanjay Patel, the director, claims that this new series will educate children about the ancient Hindu religion, and make them aware of the Gods.
The show is expected to be released by 2021.
Govt. Is Not Regulating OTT Content
Meanwhile, as per an RTI reply, it is now confirmed that Govt of India is not regulating or controlling or censoring any digital content.
This means that OTT apps such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, AltBalaji, Hotstar and others are unregulated, and uncensored.
The RTI was filed by India Today, and was replied by Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B), since Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) is the statutory censorship and classification body under this Ministry.
The reply stated: “So far as this Ministry is concerned, the content on online platforms are not being regulated at present. However your application is being transferred under Section 6 (3) of the Act to CPIO, Ministry of Electronics and IT, New Delhi to provide information pertaining to them”
In turn, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology replied, “Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) does not censor or regulate content”
Few reports had emerged, which claimed that Govt will soon start to regulate and censor OTTs, however, there exists no law to do so.
