US Immigration Shocker: Entry Banned If You Cannot Afford Healthcare

We’ve been strapped on with all the changes going on around the H-1B visa norms since 2017. They’ve nothing but tightened under Trump’s administration, vigilant to secure maximum good quality jobs for American citizens.

Trump has been fidgeting with the immigration norms since some time now, vastly cutting down the entry of immigrants in the US. The entry into the States has become very rigid and difficult. In his innumerable ways to minimize the immigration of foreigners into the US, Trump and his government has now come up with another proclamation.

As per this, all the future immigrant visa applicants will have to assure in papers, with the help of certificates and insurances that they can afford health care. This step will obviously make it more difficult for poor migrants to enter the U.S.

Trump’s Latest Tactic

The White House on Friday night issued a presidential proclamation, as per which the future immigrant visa applicants, including people with ties to family members in the U.S., will have to prove that they have health insurance or their financial ability to pay for medical care before being issued a visa that could lead to a green card.

This proclamation however, wouldn’t apply to non-citizen children of U.S. citizens. This extends to the refugees and immigrants who won asylum, as well. The administration is poised to implement a rule this month that would require many of the same applicants to demonstrate that they wouldn’t become reliant on public benefits including Medicaid should they be allowed to immigrate to the U.S.

The proclamation also allows entry into the U.S. for migrants who have the financial resources to pay for reasonably foreseeable medical costs but they haven’t put up a bar on it yet.

It has also made sure that the subsidized  plans purchased on the Affordable Care Act insurance exchanges shall not be counted as an eligible form of insurance, under this proclamation.

This Shall Cast a Problem to Immigrants, Again!

This step taken by the Trump govt is in views to make it harder for poor migrants to enter the U.S. It marks President Trump’s latest effort to restrict immigrants from entering the country.

As of now, the low-income immigrants living in the country legally can’t use Medicaid for their first five years but can receive premium subsidies if their incomes are low enough.

What has happened now is that under this proclamation, purchasing health insurance using subsidies would disqualify people from living in the country legally.

This means that these low-income immigrants are eligible for subsidized health coverage through the Affordable Care Act but applying for that subsidized coverage means they can’t legally be in the country.

Through this proclamation, the White House wants to safeguard the health-care system for American citizens by preventing immigrants from enrolling in Medicaid or going to emergency rooms with no insurance, requiring hospitals or taxpayers to cover the cost.

This new rule will apply on the thousands of hundreds of people moving to the U.S. each year on immigrant visas.
