Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has hinted that very soon, every driving license in India will be linked with Aadhaar.
But can the Govt. make it mandatory?
And what is the reason of this step?
Govt.: Every Driving License Will Be Linked With Aadhaar
During the celebration of 75th anniversary of Bihar Industry Association, Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has announced that very soon, driving license will be linked with Aadhaar.
And this step will be taken to stop frauds happening in this space.
He said, “Duplicate driving license could not be made if Aadhar becomes mandatory for it,”
Hence, without directly focussing on the mandatory linking of Aadhaar and Driving License, he hinted that the linking will start very soon.
He said that the Aadhaar linking and digital identities have helped the Govt save upto Rs 1.47 lakh crore.
And the same can be repeated, if driving licenses are linked with Aadhaar for every Indian citizen.
But Can It Be Made Mandatory?
No. As per Supreme Court’s order last year, Govt. cannot force mandatory linking of Aadhaar for any service, except welfare schemes, and this means that mandatory linking of driving license with Aadhaar wont become a reality.
Infact, even verification of driving license using Aadhaar has been stopped at RTOs since then.
This was confirmed by Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, when he said in July this year: “The Ministry in compliance to the order of the Supreme Court dated September 26, 2018 … stopped the process of verification using Aadhaar for the Driving Licences,”
Why Linking Aadhaar With Driving License Makes Sense?
There are several logical reasons for the same, and we believe that once driving licenses are linked with Aadhaar, it will make the roads safer.
Only genuine and eligible drivers should be allowed to drive vehicles, and the verification of the drivers via Aadhaar will ensure that.
Besides, catching criminals and fugitives will become streamlined, and corruption will end.
