The very popular MDH sambhar masala has been found with a hazardous ingredient: the salmonella bacteria. While there are only a few batches of the sambhar masala that have been contaminated with the bacteria, the masala has already been taken down from the markets of the USA.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has detected the bacteria in the sambhar mix, and has also issued a statement about removing it from the shelves.

However, there is no information about if the recall of the masala is voluntary.

MDH Sambhar Masala Found With Salmonella Bacteria: Taken Off The Shelves

The US FDA has declared that MDH sambhar masala mix contained the salmonella bacteria, after conducting tests on the masala. A minimum of three lots of MDH’s masala have been recalled from the markets.

The MDH Sambhar Masala is produced by the R Pure Agro Specialities and is distributed by the House of Spices. 

The masala mix boxes that recalled were initially distributed in the retail shops of Northern California. 

The statement states, “This product was tested by FDA through a certified laboratory to be positive for salmonella. The recall was initiated after it was discovered by the FDA that the salmonella contaminated products were distributed.”

People Asked To Return Purchased Masala For Full Refund; No Answer From MDH

For people who have already bought the sambhar masala, they are requested to return it back to the place from they had purchased it.

House of Spices has asked people who brought the products to return them and get refunded too. They issued a statement, saying, “Consumers who have purchased the MDH SAMBHAR MASALA, 3.5 oz (100g) are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.”

There is also the possibility that the MDH products produced by R Pure have been distributed in India as well. 

MDH has not issued an official statement as of yet. Also, this is not the first time MDH products have been detected with such products before too.

What Is Salmonella and What Are Its Hazards? 

Salmonella bacteria holds a lot of potential for harm, people who consume it can high fever, aches, headaches, lethargy, rash, blood in the urine or stool. There is a possibility of salmonella affecting humans fatally, in some cases.

This bacteria can cause a disease called salmonellosis, which spreads a foodborne illnesses. Its symptoms are diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, and fever, after 12 to 72 hours of consuming the product.
