Huawei unveiled its first pop-up sensor smartphone in the country, Huawei Y9 Prime, starting at around 15,000 rupees. It’s also currently the most affordable pop-up sensor smartphone available in India. The smartphone packs in all the necessary features backed by a full-screen display, rear three camera setup and a pop-up mechanical sensor on top.

Huawei Y9 Prime runs on an octa-core Kirin 710F chipset paired with 4GB RAM and 128GB starting at Rs 15,990.

Targeted directly at Realme X, the new Huawei Prime Y9 has a lot to offer in the same range. Huawei Y9 Prime offers a whopping 91 percent screen-to-body ratio, as much as other rivals in the range. We did a quick review running all the features, playing a few games and clicking some pictures. Here’s our Huawei Y9 review in 8 points.

Design & Build

Huawei Y9 prime comes with a polycarbonate body on the out, made to look like glass. It’s quite light and also feels premium in the hand. The smartphone features a simple finish on the out with some cool colour combinations, made out of high-quality plastic. There’s a cut in the upper middle part to differentiate the colours on two sides, something like Pixel smartphones.

It’s a notchless device with a pop-up sensor on top. There’s a physical fingerprint sensor at the back, with the camera module on the top left rear corner.

Huawei Y9 Prime is quite comfortable to hold without being very large. The weight is okay, overall ergonomics are great, the build quality is good and the device is perfectly manufactured. In India, Huawei Y9 will be available in two colour options: Sapphire Blue and Emerald Green.

Display & Viewing Experience

Huawei Y9 Prime sports a 6.59-inch Full View display with a screen resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels. The display is quite vibrant with minimal bezels on the sides with a little chin down under. The device has used a pop-up scanner on top to achieve a screen to body ratio of around 91 percent.

The display is great, and you won’t be able to find any noticeable difference at large if compared to an AMOLED panel. In broad daylight, you won’t face any issue using Huawei device.

In terms of viewing experience and angles, the new Huawei pop-up smartphone does a fantastic job. We didn’t face any issue watching videos or playing games. The screen measures 6.59-inch, perfect for watching movies for long with the massive battery at the back.

Hardware & Storage

The newly launched Huawei Y9 Prime runs on HiSilicon Kirin 710F SoC, a new in-house Huawei chip. The device will be available in a single variant with 4GB RAM and 128GB storage. You can expand the internal storage upto 256GB with an additional microSD card.

The new Kirin 710F chip is a slightly improved version of the existing Kirin 710 chip, manufactured on an 10nm architecture.

In terms of daily performance, Huawei Y9 Prime can run mid-end games with ease along with extensive multitasking. In daily use, it can easily run memory-heavy apps and social media, offering an overall good experience.

Software

Huawei Y9 Prime runs on Android 9 Pie. The new Honor device comes with EMUI skin on top. The newly improved UI does offer some refreshing features compared to the previous OS with an easy-to-use overall structure and few tweaks.

Camera

Huawei Y9 Prime comes with a triple camera setup at the back. The smartphone comes with a 16MP primary sensor, a secondary 8 megapixel lens and a 2MP depth sensor. On top, Honor 9X sports a 16MP f/2.2 pop-up camera.

Huawei Y9 Prime managed to do a fair job offering a great dynamic range with almost accurate colours irrespective of lighting conditions.

Though, at times, the camera failed to take colour-accurate pictures.

It troubled a bit in low-lit conditions, and the additional imaging sensor came out handy at times. In bright light, Huawei Y9 Prime can take detailed and sharp pictures with decent selfies with almost accurate details and colours.

Battery

Huawei Y9 Prime comes with a big 4,000 mAh battery unit with a Type-C port. The chip supports fast charging support, but doesn’t ship with a fast charger.

The device can charge up to device to 100 percent at less than two hours.

Pricing & Availability

Huawei Y9 Prime will be available in a single variant with 4GB RAM and 128GB storage priced at Rs 15,990. It is available in two colour options: Sapphire Blue and Emerald Green. Huawei has partnered with Amazon India to sell Y9 exclusively.

Amazon Prime members can buy the device from 7 August, and for others, users, Y9 Prime will be available from 8 August.

Huawei Y9 Prime: Should You Buy?

Backed by sleek and flagship-level features, Huawei Y9 Prime have something good to offer at a budget pricing. It’s also the most affordable pop-up camera smartphone in the country. Newly launched Realme X does stand as a big completion, but Huawei Y9 Prime has its own share of good features.

Huawei Y9 Prim will have some edge in terms of premium experience. The new device has a ton of great features at a very budget pricing.

Huawei Y9 Prime will challenge Realme X directly with such similar set of features and performance. Realme X is the closest rival in the range. It has almost everything on-board you would need on a mid-range premium smartphone backed by some sleek features.
