ByteDance Is Making A Smartphone

Yesterday evening, creators of TikTok: ByteDance confirmed that they are indeed creating a smartphone, and this way, they are jumping into the smartphone niche to fight against the top Chinese players such as Xiaomi, OnePlus, Oppo, Huawei and others.

This smartphone verticle of ByteDance will be developed in partnership with Smartisan Technology, which is based out of  Beijing and Chengdu.

As per their Wiki page, Smartisan has 600 employees, and they manufacture gadgets, electronic devices and consumer products related to technology.

This confirmation was needed, since ByteDance have hired several employees from Smartisan Technologies, and reportedly, the work on the smartphone was on since last 7 months.

This migration of employees from Smartisan to ByteDance was described as “normal flow of talent”, but now, things are clear.

However, as the confirmation came in from ByteDance, several tech observers started speculating about the unique features of this smartphone, which they thought would be customized and tailor-made for the TikTok users.

But no, that’s not the same.

ByteDance Smartphone Will Have No Connection With TikTok

Later in the day, ByteDance made it clear that the new smartphone which they are making in association with Smartisan will be a standalone product, having no connection or link with TikTok.

A spokesperson from ByteDance confirmed this, as he said, “Reports of our smartphone development strictly refer to a continuation of plans that were in place before ByteDance began working with Smartisan. The product has no connection with TikTok and the focus is on meeting the needs of Smartisan’s existing customer base.”

Hence, it won’t be an official ‘TikTok Phone’, and it will have no connection or link with TikTok.

Now, it would be interesting to observe how ByteDance plans to complete against the likes of Apple, Samsung and Chinese brands such as Xiaomi, OnePlus and others who have made a mark in the smartphone niche.
