Realme X First Impressions

Realme X has been bumming up since the launch, and tips to be the next big thing in the mid-range segment. The smartphone landed up in the country after a couple of months of its initial launch in China. The Realme mid-range flagship packs in some of the very-first features in the entry mid-range segment.

Being priced very competitively, Realme X will take on some of the big stars in the same category, specially the upcoming Redmi K20.

Currently, there are no smartphones available in India who offer a pop-up sensor, notchless AMOLED display, in-display fingerprint sensor, 48MP Sony sensor and fast charging all together at under 17,000 rupees. It will be interesting to find out how Xioami plans to price its regular K20.

Here’s a strategic rundown to assess whether Realme X is actually good or not.

Design & Build: Premium Glass Built On The Out!

The newly launched Realme X comes with a polycarbonate body on the out, made to look like glass. It’s quite light and also feels premium in the hand. They have gradient finish on the out with some highlighting colour combinations, made out of high-quality plastic. The colour scheme and gradient style seems stylish.

The smartphone comes with a pop-up sensor without any notch. The rear camera module on both the smartphones sits at the centre without any physical fingerprint sensor.

On the left you have the volume keys, while on the right there’s the power key. All are placed at almost the middle of the frame making it easy to reach. While Realme supports face unlock, there’s an in-display fingerprint sensor embedded under the AMOLED panel.

At the bottom, there’s the 3.5mm headphone jack along with a Type-C port and a speaker grille. It’s Realme’s first smartphone to come with a Type-C port.

The pop-up mechanism have helped the smartphone to offer a wider screen to body ratio without anything else on the display. The pop-up sensor is at the top center of the frame. In all, the overall usability is comfortable and the build quality is really good.

Display: Super AMOLED Does The Job

Realme X features a 6.53-inch full-screen Super AMOLED display, without any notch. The display is quite large and the colours are crisp and clean. The vibrancy is quite appealing with minimal bezels on the sides with a little chin down under and an in-display optical fingerprint scanner.

Realme X has a screen resolution of 2340×1080 pixels with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection on top offering a 394 PPI.

The brightness levels are good enough to make it visible under bright sunlight along with great white balance and deep blacks.

On the downside, Realme X doesn’t come with Widevine L1 certification. So, you can’t stream videos on OTT platforms like Netflix or Amazon Prime Video is true HD resolution. This could be a big bummer for many users.

Hardware & Storage: Snapdragon 710 & No Additional Storage

Realme X runs on the same entry-flagship Snapdragon 710 chip as Realme 3 Pro with up to 8GB of RAM. Based on a 10nm architecture, the Snapdragon SoC offers top-level performance on a budget. For graphics, it has the Adreno 616 GPU.

Realme X comes in two configurations: 4GB RAM with 128GB storage and 8GB RAM with 128GB storage. Sadly, there’s no room for additional storage as Realme X doesn’t come with a microSD card slot for storage expansion.

Coming to performance, Realme X can run any mid-end games with ease along with no issues in extensive multitasking. You won’t find any noticeable difference in daily use. As an addon, Realme packs in dedicated HyperBoost and GameBoost to offer an enhanced gaming experience.

In terms of hardcore gaming, there could be minimal issues as heating or a few frame drops. Though, we didn’t face any such issue. With time the device may slow down a bit considering hardcore gaming. Top games like PUBG and Asphalt 9 on high graphics ran smoothly with any drop in frame rate.

Software: New ColorOS 6

Realme X runs on the new Color OS 6 UI. The newly improved UI does offer some refreshing features compared to the previous OS with an easy-to-use overall structure and few tweaks. It’s a big upgrade over the last generation Color OS.

Based on the latest Android 9 Pie, the new ColorOS 6 UI packs in a bunch of user-friendly features and functions.

There’s Smart Assistant on the right with all the important stuff and added features like Quiet Time, Lockscreen Magazine, App Encryption and a few Smart Battery Saving options. It also comes with some preloaded apps as NewsPoint, UC Browser, WPS Office and more. All are uninstallable.

Camera: 48MP Dual Camera Setup

Realme X comes with a dual camera setup at the back featuring the 48MP Sony IMX 586 rear sensor with an f/1.7 aperture clubbed with a secondary 5MP depth sensor with f/2.4 aperture. It’s the same primary sensor currently being used on OnePlus 7 Pro.

Realme X has a motorised pop-up 16MP selfie sensor with an f/2.0 aperture, again the same Sony IMX 471 sensor used in OnePlus 7 Pro.

Realme X do a fair job offering a great dynamic range with almost accurate colours irrespective of lighting conditions. It supports Google Camera and has a dedicated Night Mode for long-exposed shots.

By default, Realme X shoots in 12MP and then stitches different photos together using pixel binning technology to offer a clear picture. To capture pictures in 48MP mode, you need to manually switch to the 48MP mode in Settings.

The 48MP does make a significant change in broad daylight with more details, but the low-light images are well taken using the 12MP standard mode along with Nightscape.

The smartphone uses AI scene recognition to automatically detect the surroundings and adjust the white balance accordingly. Realme’s proprietary Chroma Boost also does help to boost up the colours artificially with higher saturation. You can also capture bokeh shots in portrait mode.

Battery: Runs For A Day Easily

Realme X is backed by a 3,765 mAh battery. A bigger 4,000mAh would have been better, but this doesn’t disappoint you either. You can easily run for more than a day on a single charge.

The smartphone supports Type-C powered 20W VOOC 3.0 fast charging support. It can juice up Realme X from 0 to 100 per cent under 75 minutes.

Realme X ships with the 20W fast charger inside the box.

Pricing: All Okay?

Realme X is going to be available in two variants in the country. Coming the Realme X India price, it starts at Rs 16,999 for the 128GB variant with 4GB RAM. The top model with 128GB storage and 8GB RAM is priced Rs 19,999. Realme X will be available via Flipkart and official Realme online store.

Realme X Final Conclusion: Should You Buy?

Backed by flagship-level features, Realme X seem to have everything to offer for all. More interestingly, the device comes with the features you would like have to have on a flagship. And most importantly, Realme X is available at very budget-friendly price given the set of features.

With Redmi K20 at the corner, we would suggest you to wait till we do an extensive comparison.

Both being very similar in nature, the Redmi flagship features a few slightly better features.

In a nutshell, the new Realme flagship does a great job here in bringing in a top smartphone starting at under 17,000 bucks in the country. At this price, you can enjoy all the top features as a pop-up sensor, in-display fingerprint sensor, notch-less AMOLED display, 48MP camera, fast charging and such more, all at a pocket-friendly pricing.
