BrahMos Upgraded To Shoot Upto 500 km

India’s very own BrahMos, which is also the world’s fastest supersonic cruise missile, has marked another laudable achievement, and with this, has become even more powerful than it ever was.

The missile, which was previously capable of going up to 300 km has now extended its range up to a substantial 500 km.

BrahMos Upgraded With 500 km Range

It was last year when India became a member of the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR), and this has played a great role in bringing about an improvement in the BrahMos missile. Being a part of the MTCR can also boost the range of the missile even further.

CEO of Brahmos Aerospace, Sudhir Kumar Mishra said, “India has successfully test-fired a vertical deep dive version of BrahMos, the world’s fastest supersonic cruise missile, that can now change the dynamics of conventional warfare. The upgraded version of the missile with enhanced range of up to 500 km is also ready.”

He was speaking during an interview that was broadcast on Doordarshan News.

He has also declared that now it is possible to fight against any ship which is about 300 to 400 km away. He also spoke about the possibility of aiming at land targets “up to hundreds of km and with the test that we have conducted.”

BrahMos Aerospace is a joint venture under the ownership of the governments of India and Russia, and the project which started at Rs. 1300 crore, is now at a huge Rs. 48000 crore.

BrahMos: World’s Fastest Supersonic Cruise Missile

The Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has worked on upgrading the missile and has conducted tests that show that BrahMos can fire up to 500 km now, as compared to its previous capability of 300 km.

The missile was tested with the mainstay fighter jet Sukhoi, which showed that BrahMos can travel at 2.8 Mach, which is almost three times that of the speed of sound. It is also the heaviest weapon to be employed on the Su-30 fighters. The test also conducted the first vertical deep dive version of the missile, and that too, with great success.

India is now the only country that will incorporate long-range missiles into fighter jets, as was proved by the tests conducted.

As per Mishra, the BrahMos missile has become a weapon of priority and choice for the Army, Navy, and Airforce. Additionally, the 90-degree version has become an ultimate aircraft carrier killer.
