Vivo Z1 Pro vs Moto One Vision vs Galaxy M40: Is Vivo Playing The Game Right? (Camera, Specs, Price & More!)

While companies were slowly getting into the punch-hole display space, Vivo came with a big surprise for all. Starting with Galaxy M40, Samsung was the first company to launch the cheapest punch-hole display smartphone in the country, soon followed by Moto One Vision, both under 20,000 rupees.

But, Vivo surprised us all with a smartphone with the same design and specs starting at under Rs 15,000.

The company unveiled a new series in the country, Z series to focus on the budget segment with good devices. Vivo Z1 Pro, the first device of the new Vivo Z series boasts some really good features, all starting at under 15,000 rupees. While Moto One Vision and Galaxy M40 fail the price game here, does Z1 Pro can beat the two in all departments?

We did a comprehensive comparison between all these newly launched punch-hole display smartphones: Galaxy M40, Moto One Vision and Vivo Z1 Pro to find out who’s worth the hype.

Design & Build

The just-released Vivo Z1 Pro comes with a high-quality polycarbonate body. It’s plastic, but does feel premium to an extent. In comparison, Moto One Vision is quite tall and has a sturdy built on the out. The smartphone comes in an 21:9 aspect ratio display with a hole-punch display.

The unique 21:9 CinemaVision display has a wider length than traditional 19:9 screens. The smartphone’s got a tall body, easily noticeable.

Finally, the Samsung Galaxy M40 carries on with the same body and build from its predecessor, Galaxy M30, a high quality polycarbonate built with gradient colour schemes.

All the three smartphones, Vivo Z1 Pro, Moto One Vision and Galaxy M40 come with a plastic body (fingerprint magnets) and a rear mounted fingerprint sensor. The colour schemes on Z1 Pro are a bit stylish, and that’s the only difference between the three in terms of build and design technology.

Display

Vivo Z1 Pro has a huge 6.53-inch Full HD+ display which offers a screen-to-body ratio of 90.77 percent with a screen resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels. Galaxy M40 features a smaller 6.3-inch full-screen Full HD+ display with 409 PPI without any notch to offer a little more than 91 percent screen-to-body ratio.

Motorola One Vision sports a 21:9 CinemaVision 6.3-inch Full HD+ display with a punch-hole design, which is comparatively taller.

The key highlight of all the three smartphones remain its in-display punch-hole camera.

They ditched the notch to offer a full-screen display. They share a similar screen resolution of 2340×1080 pixels with Corning Gorilla Glass protection on top.

The punch-holes inside the display are used to put in their front cameras with very thin bezels. Both Vivo Z1 Pro and Galaxy M40 have a thin chin, which is a bit wider on Moto One Vision comparatively.

Vivo Z1 Pro has the largest display of the three and Motorola One Vision with the unique 21:9 CinemaVision taller display makes it an apt choice for content consumption. In terms of extended movie viewing experience, it’s going to be better on One Vision, thanks to the tall display.

Hardware & Storage

Qualcomm Snapdragon 712 chipset has been used for Vivo Z1 Pro, the most advanced of the thee. Based on an 10nm architecture, it couples with Adreno 616 GPU. Snapdragon 712 is almost 10 per cent faster than Snapdragon 710 chip. It offers 45 per cent better graphical performance and 2 times better AI performance, helping the Vivo smartphone deliver around 25 percent better overall performance.

On the other hand, Galaxy M40 is powered by the entry-flagship Snapdragon 675 chip with 6GB of RAM and Adreno 612 GPU. Based on a 11nm architecture, the Snapdragon SoC offers some top-level performance on a budget.

Finally, the Motorola smartphone packs in a Samsung Exynos 9609 chip with four Cortex A73 performance cores and four Cortex A55 efficiency cores and 4GB of RAM.

The Snapdragon 675 is said to be closer to the previous generation flagship Snapdragon chips in terms of performance, while Exynos 9609 is a mid-range driver able to carry out day to day tasks with ease.

In terms of daily performance, all the three devices can run almost all tasks and mid-end games without any hiccups. There won’t be any noticeable difference in daily use given the memory-heavy apps and social media, but Snapdragon 712 and Snapdragon 675 will have some edge when it comes to extended gaming and extensive multitasking.

Finally, the respective UIs will play their own roles to boost up the real-world smartphone performance. Moto One Vision being an Android One smartphone have the advantage of a clean and uncluttered UI.

Software

Motorola One Vision runs on clean stock Android 9 Pie OS out of the box, as any other Pixel device. It’s part of Google’s Android One program, so you will get two years of guaranteed software version upgrades and three years of timely Android security patches from Google.

Vivo Z1 Pro also runs on Android 9 Pie, but with Funtouch 9.0 UI on top

Samsung Galaxy M40 runs on Android 9 Pie based on company’s OneUI with multiple customisations and bloatware.

Samsung’s OneUI comes loaded with features and bloatware, while Android One will help Motorola One Vision to deliver some crisp clean performance as any other Pixel or Nokia device (under HMD Global).

The Funtouch 9.0 UI is also loaded with bloatware and customisations.

Camera

Galaxy M40 and Vivo Z1 Pro features a rear triple camera system additionally featuring an ultra wide-angle camera in the mix. Samsung Galaxy M40 flaunts a 32-megapixel primary sensor with an f/1.7 aperture and a 5-megapixel secondary depth sensor with an f/2.2 aperture and a third 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens with an f/2.2 aperture.

Z1 Pro features a 16-megapixel primary sensor coupled with a 8-megapixel super-wide secondary sensor and a 2-megapixel depth sensor.

Finally, Motorola One Vision features a dual-rear camera setup consisting of a 48-megapixel primary quad-pixel camera with OIS support and f/1.7 aperture with a secondary 5-megapixel f/2.2 camera lens for depth sensing.

Upfront, there is a 25-megapixel quad-pixel selfie camera built into the punch hole display. Galaxy M40 features a 16MP shooter and Z1 Pro has a 32MP camera inside the punch-hole.

Vivo Z1 Pro can take good detailed and sharp pictures in bright light with accurate colours. In poorly lit conditions, Vivo Z1 Pro manages to click decent photos with almost accurate details and colours.

The dynamic range is good on Galaxy M40, and it captures quite accurate details and produce good colours. The HDR works fine while Galaxy M40 has some edge in some areas and the ultra-wide lens is handy at times. In comparison, Moto Vision packs in a 48MP primary lens with OIS support, both missing on Vivo Z1 Pro and Galaxy M40.

The camera interfaces are quite minimal and has modes to enhance the overall photography. AI works on both to adjust to the particular lighting and adjust the filters. In all, all thee three do good and make use of their respective lenses to take up some great shots.

Battery

Galaxy M40 and Moto One Vision both pack in a 3,500mAh battery, capable of running a whole day on a single charge and moderate usage. Again, both the smartphones support fast charging, and will ship with a 15W fast charger inside the box.

Being an M-series smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy M40 is an online exclusive model only. So, there’s no offline availability.

On the other hand, Motorola One Vision also comes in a single variant in India with 4GB RAM and 128GB onboard storage costing Rs 19,999. It will be available in two color options: Bronze Gradient and Sapphire Gradient via Flipkart from June 27.

Finally, Vivo Z1 Pro is available in three models starting at Rs 14,990 with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage. The mid-end variant comes with 6GB RAM and 64GB storage costing Rs 16,990 and a top model with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage priced at Rs 18,990.

CONCLUSION: Vivo Z1 Pro vs Galaxy M40 vs Vivo V15

Both Moto One Vision and Galaxy M40 share a lot in common and each pack in a good set of features backed by some flagship level specs. But, Vivo Z1 has some excellent features onboard at a very affordable price. All three have something in common, a new punch-hole design technology.

But Vivo Z1 Pro beats both when it comes to value for money proposition.

Going head to head, Galaxy M40 have a slight edge over Vivo Z1 Pro and Moto One Vision with a better camera and image processing. While Moto One Vision has a 21:9 Cinematic display, seamless pure Android experience and the 48MP camera with OIS support.

Finally, if you are looking for a budget-friendly punch-hole display smartphone, Vivo Z1 Pro does make a good choice. It ticks all the boxes right, and packs in a solid performance backed by a better processor, bigger display, larger battery and more options to choose from.
