Probably for the first time, Indian Railways will allocate 50% of all jobs under RPF (Railway Protection Force) and GRP (Government Railway Police) to women.
This is a huge change which will trigger more participation from women in the Railways, especially for handling law and order.
Overall, 2.5 lakh new jobs have been announced.
50% Quota For Women In Railways Jobs
While replying to a query in Rajya Sabha, Railways Minister Piyush Goyal said that in the next one year, Indian Railways will recruit 9000 constables and sub-inspectors, deployed under RPF (Railway Protection Force) and GRP (Government Railway Police).
50% of all these jobs would be reserved for women.
This has been done to increase the number of women constables and officers in RPF and GRP.
As of now, there are only 1769 lady constables with RPF.
However, this will change now, as Railways has reserved 4,216 posts for women out of 8619 constable job posts, and 301 vacancies for women out of 1120 sub-inspector posts.
The Minister said, “This process is likely to be completed soon and this will further increase the number of lady constables and officers in Railway Protection Force,”
While RPF comes under Indian Railways for checking railway’s infrastructure, trains, station, GRP comes under State Govt. and is primarily responsible for maintaining law and order in and around railway stations and within trains.
2.5 Lakh New Jobs Announced
At the same time, The Minister has announced 2.5 lakh new jobs, and overall 4 lakh jobs for which recruitment process is underway.
He said that 1.5 lakh vacant posts are lying within the Railways, which will be filled in soon. Whereas 2.25 to 2.5 lakh new jobs will be created, under various departments.
This is in line with Indian Railways’ commitment to recruiting 4 lakh people by 2021, out of which 10% quota has been reserved for economically backward classes.
He said, “Last year, we started the recruitment process for 1.51 lakh posts. Of that 1.31 lakh posts are still vacant. About 99000 posts will be vacant in coming two years because as many as 53,000 in 2019 and 46,000 employees in 2020 will retire.”
