The Delhi Government has declared its first-ever electric vehicles testing project, wherein 1000 electric vehicles will be used for deliveries of goods.
Considering the constant push the Government has been giving to replace petrol-driven automobiles with electrically powered ones, this is definitely a step forward in the same direction.

Amazon, Flipkart, Zomato Join Forces With Delhi Govt.
In a first of its kind move, major ecommerce and digital companies have joined forces with Delhi Govt. to enable deliveries via electric vehicles.
Some of the biggest names such as Zomato, Uber Eats, Amazon, Flipkart, Big Basket, Grofers have joined the project called Deliver Electric Delhi, wherein more than 1000 electric vehicles will be used for delivering orders.
Not only that, but automobile firms such as Hero Electric, Mahindra Electric, Tata Motors along with logistics major Blue Dart Express has also joined this project.
Why is This Happening?
Delhi is now notorious for its pollution, and it deteriorates during the winters as fog and smoke combine to engulf the city, and choke its residents.
This new initiative to use electric vehicles for deliveries can help to reduce the pollution.
Kailash Gahlot, Minister of Transport, Government of NCT of Delhi said, “Delhi government is committed to reduce vehicular pollution through the introduction of electric vehicles.”
Deliver Electric Delhi is a joint project between Dialogue and Development Commission of Delhi (DDC-Delhi) and Rocky Mountain Institute.
Govt. of India’s Electric Mobility Push
This new development is a logical extension of Indian Govt. push for electric mobility, and phasing out fuel based cars and two-wheelers in the coming years.
Govt. has already ordered Uber and Ola to convert 40% of their fleet into the electric mode by 2026, and reports from auto-firms have been asked, regarding how electric mobility can expand in India.
Incentives such as zero registration fees for electric vehicles has already been proposed, and more incentives and discounts for electric vehicle users will be put forward in the coming days.
However, there are challenges which need to be sorted out.
Ola attempted their electric vehicle fleet, but they failed, and the project had to be dropped..
After Govt said that only electric 2-wheelers will be sold in India, automobile firms are seeking more time, and more clarity on this whole thing.
