Samsung launched another hit Galaxy M series smartphone in the country, and it seems like a winner at under 20,000 bucks. While we are still waiting for the Redmi K20 and Realme X in India, for now, Samsung will face some stiff challenge from Vivo V15, the only notch-less smartphone in the same budget.
Vivo V15 and Galaxy M40 hit the same category with their own respective features.
While they still have a lot in common, there’s more to compare too.
Today we are comparing the two notch-less smartphones under 20,000 rupees to find out, who’s going to have an edge in the segment. While both come with different design technologies, they have a lot to share in terms of hardware and internal features.
Here’s an in-depth strategic comparison between the upcoming Galaxy M40 and Vivo V15. We have divided the primary categories into six sections: design and build, display, hardware, software, camera, battery and pricing.

Design & Build
Vivo V15 comes with a pop-up sensor without any notch. The rear camera module sits at the rear-left with a physical fingerprint sensor at the top-middle. V15 dons a mix of a 3D gradient finish at the back with curved sides at back for firm gripping.
While, in comparison, the Samsung Galaxy M40 carries on with the same body and build from its predecessor, Galaxy M30, a high quality polycarbonate built with gradient colour schemes.
Both Vivo V15 and Galaxy M40 comes with a rear mounted fingerprint sensor offering a higher to screen to body ratio.
Display
Vivo V15 packs in an Ultra FullView 6.53-inch display offering a 90.95 percent screen-to-body ratio without any notch with fifth-generation Corning Gorilla Glass protection on top. In comparison, Galaxy M40 will feature a 6.3-inch full-screen Full HD+ TFT display with 409 PPI, again without any notch to offer a little more than 91 percent screen-to-body ratio.
Both have an interesting take here to cover up for the notches.
As both the smartphones ditched the notch, each has a different solution to offer a full-screen display. They share a similar screen resolution of 2340×1080 pixels with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection on top.
Samsung Galaxy M40 uses a punch-hole inside the display to put in their front camera called the Infinity-O display, while Vivo V15 uses a pop-up mechanical sensor.
Both the displays are quite interesting in terms of technology innovation, and you have the option to pick your favourite kind of notch-less display on a budget. The punch-hole display on Galaxy M40 resembles the Galaxy S10 series while the pop-up sensor on Vivo V15 is largely similar to OnePlus 7 Pro.
Hardware & Storage
Galaxy M40 is powered by entry-flagship Snapdragon 675 chip as Redmi Note 7 Pro or Vivo V15 Pro with 6GB of RAM paired with Adreno 612 GPU. Based on a 11nm architecture, the Snapdragon SoC offers some top-level performance on a budget.
In comparison, Vivo V15 packs in the Mediatek Helio P70 12nm chip coupled with 6GB of RAM.
The Snapdragon 675 is said to be closer to the previous generation flagship Snapdragon chips in terms of performance. MediaTek Helio P70 is good as well, and can carry out day to day tasks with ease.
Vivo V15 comes in a single storage configuration: 6GB RAM with 64GB storage, expandable up to 256GB. Samsung Galaxy M40 will also be available in a single storage model with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage, expandable up to 512GB.
In terms of daily performance, both Vivo V15 and Galaxy M40 will end up on almost on the same line running mid-end games and multitasking.
There won’t be any noticeable difference in daily use given the memory-heavy apps and social media.
But, Snapdragon 675 will have a certain edge when it comes to top-end gaming like PUBG or Asphalt 9 on high resolution and more.
There won’t be any huge difference in terms of performance, but certainly Galaxy M40 has an edge here over Vivo V15 with a better processor. Vivo actually uses the same SD 675 AIE chip for the Vivo V15 top-model, the V15 Pro. So, it’s obviously better on paper.
Finally, the respective UIs will play their own roles to boost up the real-world smartphone performance.
Software
Vivo V15 comes with the latest Funtouch OS 9 on top of Android 9 UI and it’s own share of bloatware. Samsung Galaxy M40 also runs on Android 9 Pie based OneUI with multiple tweaks and bloatware.
Both the respective UIs from Vivo and Samsung comes loaded with features and bloatware, so it’s up to you what would you prefer.
Camera
Both the smartphones come with a rear triple camera system. To start with, Vivo V15 comprises of a 12MP Dual Pixel primary sensor (24 million photosensitive units) coupled with an 8MP AI Super wide-angle camera and a tertiary 5MP depth shooter.
The secondary 8MP AI Super wide-angle camera can expand the view to upto 120 degrees. It helps to capture wider shots for a better view and proper details.
The Vivo smartphone also has powerful, easy to use AI features to add an additional level of details depending upon scenes and lighting.
In comparison, Galaxy M40 also has an ultra-wide-angle camera in the mix. Samsung Galaxy M40 features a 32-megapixel primary sensor with an f/1.7 aperture, 5-megapixel secondary depth sensor with an f/2.2 aperture and finally an 8-megapixel tertiary sensory with an ultra-wide-angle lens with an f/2.2 aperture and 123-degree wide-angle view with AI supported features.
Upfront, the smartphone has a 16MP shooter with an f/2.2 aperture inside the punch-hole and Vivo V15 has a 32MP pop-up selfie camera. Both do well in their own quarters.
Vivo has an AI Super Night Mode to capture multiple photos at different exposure and Samsung has a dedicated night mode for long-exposed shots.
Both the camera interfaces are quite minimal and has modes to enhance the overall photography. AI works on both to adjust to the particular lighting and adjust the filters.
The dynamic range is good, and both capture quite accurate details and produce good colours. The HDR works fine while Galaxy M40 has some edge in some areas. In all, both do good, and use their respective lenses to take up some great shots.
Battery
Galaxy M40 packs in a 3,500mAh battery, capable of running a whole day on a single charge and moderate usage. It supports fast charging, and will ship with a 15W fast charger inside the box.
V15 houses a bigger 4,000mAh battery and Vivo’s in-house Dual-Engine Fast Charging technology, without any fast charger in the box.
Pricing, India Availability
Galaxy M40 was launched in the country couple of days back in a single variant with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage at Rs 19,990. The smartphone will be available in two colour options: Sea Water Blue and Midnight Blue in India, exclusively online via Amazon India starting on June 18, 12 noon.
Being an M-series smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy M40 is an online exclusive model only. So, there’s no offline availability.
In comparison, Vivo V15 is available is also available in a single variant with 6GB RAM and 64GB storage in Glamour Red, Frozen Black and Royal Blue at Rs 19,990 on Vivo India E-Store, Amazon India, Flipkart, PayTm Mall, Tata CLiQ and more.
Galaxy M40 vs Vivo V15 – Can Galaxy M40 Beat Redmi K20, Realme X & Vivo V15?
Both Vivo and Galaxy M40 share a good set of features backed by some flagship factors. They both bring in some new design technology at an upper range budget-friendly price, namely, the pop-up sensor technology and punch-hole display respectively.
Currently, these are the only two phones to come with the pop-up sensor and punch-hole technology at under 20,000 rupees.
Soon, we will have Redmi K20, Realme X and Vivo Z1 Pro, but the game’s between Galaxy M40 and Vivo V15 now.
Going head to head, Galaxy M40 may have a slight edge over Vivo V15 with a better processor and slightly better camera, but they are really close.
But both Samsung and Vivo have done a great job to bring in a notch-less display, good rear triple cameras with mid-range entry-flagship processors. Galaxy M40 will be available from June 18, while Vivo V15 is already available via its regular channels.
