Here’s How Oppo & Xiaomi In-Display Selfie Cameras Work: Finally A No-Hole No-Pop-Up Phone?

The new in-display selfie camera technology unveiled by Oppo and Xiaomi can turn out to be a path-breaking smartphone innovation. While companies are trying long to make a true notch-less full-screen display without the use of any additional mechanical parts or holes, and this seem to make it happen.

As smartphone displays started to evolve, we saw a huge rush to add notches to chin up the screen to body display ratio.

While other started to add up pop-up cameras, a few companies made holes within the display.

Under-Display Camera Technology: What It Is?

Many would confuse the under display camera technology with the punch-hole display smartphones. It’s not the same. The punch-hole displays practically have a hole inside the display i.e a dark black hole, or like a capsule as we saw on S10 Plus.

But the under-display camera technology works smartly.

The camera’s there, but you can’t see it. The selfie sensor sits perfectly under the display while you can’t see any hole or a spot or anything.

Xiaomi calls the under-display camera technology “the ultimate solution for a full screen display coexisting with a front camera.” The new technology will help manufacturers to hide the front-facing camera under the display without leaving any trace.

But, How Does It Work?

The display area over the camera lens is going to be transparent in an instant. When you are going to capture a selfie or make a video call, it will instantaneously go transparent, allowing light to enter and capture a shot or activate the front-facing shooter.

The in-display camera technology basically works around with a transparent display.

The Oppo prototype with an in-display selfie camera was shown off without any visible front-facing camera. The camera is hidden under the display while it can perfectly capture images from within the screen.

As of now, both the Oppo and Xiaomi devices with an under-display selfie camera worked perfectly without any hassle.

Transparent Displays With Under Display Front Camera: Can It Work?

While the companies are yet to announce a date for the official release of the smartphones, it’s also important to understand how will it add up to the price. These under display selfie sensor smartphones have to come with panels with high-transmittance.

This seems like a perfect solution which to a true notch-less smartphones without the need of any additional mechanical parts or hole inside the display.

The displays used for the devices are made using high-transmittance, low-reflective glass.

This allows the smartphone panel to go transparent when needed, allowing the front facing sensor to capture light. As soon as the light enters the space, the smartphone can start capturing images and videos.

It could a tedious process, but do mind that this happens instantaneously.

Xiaomi Under Display Selfie Smartphone Launch: Are They Coming Soon?

Both Oppo and Xiaomi has a prototype devices ready with an under-display selfie camera. Xiaomi added it to its current flagship Mi 9, and the Oppo device remains unknown.

They are yet to release the official dates, so the commercial launch may take a few more months.

Xiaomi also filed a patent recently which to use two alternately-driven display portions to allow light to pass through to the camera sensor.

Samsung also is working on a front facing camera smartphone underneath the display.

If Oppo has the latest under display camera technology, we can expect it soon on the devices of Vivo, OnePlus and Realme as well, the sister companies under BBK.

While we need to wait to use such devices hands-on, the upcoming technology does make the future exciting!
