Samsung Galaxy M40 vs Redmi K20

Samsung is all set bring in another hit Galaxy M series smartphone to the country, Galaxy M40, this time with an all new fresh design. Recently, Xiaomi also surprised us all with its new flagship series under its now separated Redmi brand, Redmi K20 series.

While the Redmi K20 Pro continues to garner wide attention, the Redmi K20 is trying to keep up the hype.

Interestingly, the regular Redmi K20 will also play a major role in the India market in the mid-range segment.

With Galaxy M40 set to hit the same segment soon, today we are comparing the two find out, who’s going to have an edge in the segment. While both come with very different design technologies, they have a lot to share in terms of hardware and internal features.

Here’s an in-depth strategic comparison between the upcoming Galaxy M40 and Redmi K20. We have divided the primary categories into six sections: design and build, display, hardware, software, camera, battery and pricing.

Let’s begin.

Contents

Design & Build

Redmi K20 comes with a pop-up sensor without any notch. The rear camera module sits at the centre without any rear physical fingerprint sensor. Redmi K20 dons a mix of glass and metal with a 3D gradient finish at the back with curved sides at back for firm gripping.

While the Samsung Galaxy M40 will carry on with the same body and build from its predecessor, Galaxy M30.

So, it’s going to be a high quality polycarbonate built with gradient colour schemes.

Redmi K20 comes with an in-display fingerprint sensor while Galaxy M40 retains the physical fingerprint sensor at the back. Personally, we would prefer the physical one. No need to look and easy to find.

Display

Redmi K20 Pro features a 6.39-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display without any notch in a 19.5:9 aspect ratio with 600 nits of maximum brightness supporting HDR content. In comparison, Galaxy M40 will feature a 6.3-inch full-screen Super AMOLED display with 409 PPI, again without any notch.

But here comes in an interesting difference. While both the smartphones ditches the notch, each has a different solution to offer a full-screen display.

Firstly both have in-display optical fingerprint sensors backed by AMOLED panels to show off the best of darks. They share a similar screen resolution of 2340×1080 pixels with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection on top.

But, Samsung Galaxy M40 uses a punch-hole inside the display to put in their front camera called the Infinity-O display, while Redmi K20 uses a pop-up mechanical sensor.

The Redmi K20 pop-up camera comes with sapphire protection to be wear-resistant and scratch-resistant.

Both the displays are quite interesting in terms of technology innovation, and you have the option to pick your favourite kind of notch-less display on a budget. The punch-hole display on Galaxy M40 resembles the Galaxy S10 series while the pop-up sensor on Redmi K20 is largely similar to OnePlus 7 Pro.

Hardware & Storage

Galaxy M40 will be powered by entry-flagship Snapdragon 675 chip as Redmi Note 7 Pro or Vivo V15 with up to 6GB of RAM paired with Adreno 612 GPU. Based on a 11nm architecture, the Snapdragon SoC offers some top-level performance on a budget.

In comparison, Redmi K20 packs in the newly launched Snapdragon 730 chipset with up to 8GB of RAM coupled with Adreno 616 GPU.

The new Snapdragon 730 is said to be closer to the previous flagship Snapdragon 835 chip in terms of performance.

Redmi K20 and come in two configurations: 6GB RAM with 64GB storage and 8GB RAM with 128GB storage, while Galaxy M40 will be available in a single storage model with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage.

In terms of daily performance, both Redmi K20 and Galaxy M40 will end up on the same line running mid-end games with ease along with extensive multitasking. There won’t be any noticeable difference in daily use given the memory-heavy apps and social media.

But the new Snapdragon 730 will have certain edge when it comes to top-end gaming like PUBG on high resolution and more.

Xiaomi has also added an 8 layer liquid cooling system to keep the phone cool during extended gaming sessions guarded by a three dimension double-sided cooling graphite architecture with special Game Turbo 2.0 mode to optimize the smartphone for gaming.

There won’t be any huge difference in terms of performance, but certainly Redmi K20 has an edge here over Galaxy M40. Also, their respective UIs will play in a role to boost up the smartphone performance.

Software

Redmi K20 comes with the latest MIUI 10 based on the same Android 9 Pie. The smartphone will get priority access to the Android Q beta program, unlike  Samsung Galaxy M40. But MIUI has its own share of flaws like system and in-mobile ads.

Galaxy M40 will run on Android 9 Pie based OneUI with multiple tweaks and bloatware.

Both the respective UIs from Xiaomi and Samsung comes loaded with features and bloatware, so it’s up to you what would you prefer. As an added advantage, Redmi K20 gets the current Android Q access out of the box.

Camera

Both the smartphones come with a rear triple camera system. To start with, Redmi K20 Pro packs in a primary 48MP Sony IMX 582 (not the IMX 586) sensor with an f/1.75 aperture coupled with an 8MP telephoto secondary sensor with an f/2.4 aperture.

There’s an additional tertiary 13MP wide-angle sensor as well with an f/2.5 aperture and a 124.8-degree field of view to add up to the photography.

Galaxy M40 have an ultra wide-angle camera in the mix. It’s expected to feature a 32MP primary main camera coupled with 8MP and 5MP shooters to support ultra-wide and depth shots.

Redmi K20 will have a 20MP sensor upfront supporting wide-angle shots while Galaxy M40 will have a 16MP punch-hole front camera.

Battery

Redmi K20 houses a huge 4,000 mAh battery backed by AI smart optimization to extend the phone’s battery to last longer supporting 18W fast charging technology. The charge time may vary from 90 to 100 minutes.

On the other hand, the Galaxy M40 will pack in massive 5,000mAh battery, capable of running upto two days on a single charge. It supports fast charging, and will ship with a 15W fast charger.

Both the smartphones ship with the fast charger inside the box.

Pricing & India Launch

Redmi K20 has been launched in two variants in China. The base variant comes with 6GB RAM and 64GB storage costing 1,999 Yuan (around Rs 20,100). The top-end variant with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage costs 2,099 Yuan (around Rs 21,100).

The Redmi K20 India price will start somewhere below Rs 20,000 in India, or maybe even low.

Xiaomi India has already confirmed the launch of the Redmi K20 smartphones in India. While the official date has not been announced yet, the India launch should happen sometime in June.

While Samsung has already confirmed that they are bringing their latest Galaxy M40 to the country on June 11. The pieces are not out yet, but there will be a single variant with 128GB storage and it’s expected to cost somewhere between 20,000 to 25,000 rupees, or even lower.

For Redmi K20, we expect the base model of Redmi K20 with 6GB RAM and 64GB storage to cost Rs 19,999 in India, while the top-model with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage may cost Rs 21,999 in the country.

CONCLUSION: Galaxy M40 vs Redmi K20

Both Redmi K20 and Galaxy M40 share a good set of features backed by some flagship factors. They both bring in some new design technology at a budget-friendly price, namely, pop-up sensor technology and punch-hole display.

While it’s not the first time smartphones are going to have these features, but it’s for the very first time these flagship traits will be available in mid-range devices.

Also, Galaxy M40 is the only smartphone in the mid-range segment to offer a punch-hole display and Redmi K20 has Realme X challenging it with a similar pop-up sensor.

Going head to head, Redmi K20 has slightly better features compared to Galaxy M40.

The Redmi flagship has an upper hand, but again with certain flagship features. But both Galaxy M40 and Redmi K20 have done a great job with a notch-less display, rear triple cameras and mid-range entry-flagship processors.

While Galaxy M40 debuts in the country on June 11, the Redmi K20 is expected to arrive during the same time. Samsung has also confirmed that Galaxy M40 will be available exclusively via Amazon India.
