Cyclone Fani Smashes India: 100 Million People Will Face Its Wrath; 200+ Trains Cancelled (See The Full List)

Early in the morning today, Odisha was hit by the Cyclone Fani at the wind speed of 175 kmph, which has been termed as ‘extremely severe.’ A yellow alert has been declared by the government, which means that there will be heavy rainfall at some places too.

Odisha is not new to this, and yet, each cyclone that hits the state throws apart the lives of the citizens even more. However, the Government is pulling out all the stops to take preventive measures as well as recovery actions too.

Cyclone Fani and Odisha’s History of Cyclones

Odisha has been subjected to multiple cyclones and the state and its people have faced immense loss in the past.

In 1999, a super cyclone hit Odisha and the death toll went up to over 10,000. From crops and trees to homes and electric poles, everything in Odisha has been devastated by the recurring cyclones.

On October 12, 2013, Odisha suffered loss from the cyclone Phailin, in which 30 people had to lose their lives. The death toll was low due to the timely evacuation of people from Odisha and Andhra Pradesh as well.

Cyclone Fani will not be any exception and is expected to rip the state apart. A whopping 14 districts of Odisha are expected to face the wrath of the cyclone – Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Balasore, Bhadrak, Ganjam, Khurda, Jajpur, Nayagarh, Cuttack, Gajapati, Mayurbhanj, Dhenkanal and Keonjhar.

The Government To The Rescue!

The government has set up rescue camps, stocked all the necessary supplies and is all set to face the disaster named Cyclone Fani.

As many as 1 million people have been evacuated from their homes, and according to Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) B P Sethi, this is the largest evacuation ever carried out in the country. Around 880 cyclone centres, school and college buildings and other such organizations have been set up for the affected people. More than one lakh packets of dry food have also been made ready, and these will be dropped by air in the areas hit by the cyclone.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has made sure that authorities enforce extra measures to ensure safety of pregnant women, children, elderly people and differently-abled persons.

Indian Railways Cancels Trains; Offers Full Refund

As a part of the precautionary measure, Indian Railways have cancelled around 223 trains that travel on the Kolkata Chennai route via the Odisha coastline. These trains will be canceled till the 4th of May, and the national transporter has promised full refund to passengers. However, refund will be granted only if the cancellation of tickets is initiated within three days from the scheduled date of journey.

Also, a special train will run from Puri at 12 noon, to Shalimar, West Bengal, stopping at Khurda Road, Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Jajpur, Kendujhar Road, Bhadrak, Baleswar and Kharagpur. There are two more special trains that will travel from Puri to Howrah as well.

Here are all the details of the trains cancelled:

Eastern Railways

140 Mail/Express trains and 83 passenger trains have been canceled.
All the trains that belong to the Bhadrak-Vizianagaram section (along Odisha coastline) of Kolkata-Chennai route have been cancelled.
Howrah-Chennai Central Coromandal Express, Patna-Eranakulam Express, New Delhi-Bhubaneswar Rajdhani Express, Howrah-Hyderabad East Coast Express and the Bhubaneswar-Rameswaram Express have been canceled
The New Delhi-Bhubaneswar Rajdhani Express, New Delhi-Puri Nandan Kanan Express, Puri-New Delhi Purushottam Express and the New Delhi-Puri Purushottam Express have been cancelled too.
Trains scheduled to run on Friday, Bhubaneswar-New Delhi Rajdhani Express and the Puri-New Delhi Nandan Kanan Express have been canceled as well.
42 trains of the South Central Railway have also been canceled.
