For the calendar year 2018, Maruti Suzuki Dzire beat Maruti Alto to become the best selling car in India. And by doing this, Dzire achieved a huge feat as Alto had been the top-selling car of India for 13 consecutive years. However, Alto has once again regained the top position as it becomes India’s number one selling car for FY 2019.
2018 was a huge year for Maruti Suzuki Dzire as it was the first time ever that a sedan had beat the hatchback and went on to become number one.

Maruti Suzuki Dominates The Top Ten List
As per a report released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, the Indian automobile industry produces different types of vehicles, which are Passenger Vehicles, Commercial Vehicles, Three Wheelers, Two Wheelers, and Quadricycle. Â
In the top 10 best selling cars of India, Maruti Suzuki has shown dominance, as seven of the ten cars are of Maruti Suzuki make. For the financial year of 2018-19, Alto managed to sell 2,59,401 units, whereas, the number was 2,58,539 in the last fiscal year.
Alto, DZire, Swift, Baleno, Vitara Brezza, and WagonR of Maruti Suzuki have secured the top six positions respectively in the list. Whereas, Hyundai’s Elite i20, Grand i10, Creta stand seventh, eighth and ninth respectively. The tenth spot, again, is Maruti Suzuki, with Celerio.
Maruti Suzuki Dzire sold about 2,53,859 units against 1,96,990 units sold last year. Maruti Suzuki Swift sold 223924 cars in this year whose last year’s numbers were190840. Baleno sold 1,75,928.
Hero MotoCorp Tops Two Wheeler Brands
In the two-wheeler sectors, Hero MotoCorp and Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India are India’s biggest manufacturers of two-wheelers. For FY 2019, Hero MotoCorp has topped the list, followed by Honda. However, Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India’s (HMSI) sales have fallen by 4.12 % as they were 57,75,287 in FY 2018 and they are now 55,20,617.
HMSI has probably suffered the worst downfall in India since its establishment. However, two-wheeler sales have been on the decline in India overall. At the end of 2018-2019, most of the companies clocked a downfall in sales.
TVS, Bajaj, Royal Enfield, Yamaha, are in the top six, whereas, Suzuki, Piaggio, Mahindra, Kawasaki stand at the seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth position respectively.
