How to identify fake Rs 2000 currency note?
There are a number of issues with the ATM machines of today, and dispensing fake currency is the one that tops the long list. In Lucknow, 5 ATMs of a private bank were audited and fake notes of Rs. 2000 were found.
The amount these fake notes made up is as high as Rs. 4.26 lakh.

5 ATMs with Fake Rs. 2000 Notes
The private bank started receiving complaints from customers that their ATMs were dispensing fake notes. To investigate the matter, the bank asked CMS Infosystem Limited, which has partnered with a lot of banks to conduct an audit to check the situation, which resulted in the company validating the claims.
The company scrutinized all the ATMs of the said private bank in the city over a span of 20 days and in this duration, managed to catch hold of about 213 fake notes of Rs. 2000 across 5 ATMs. these 5 ATMs are located in Jankipuram, Sarojininagar, Kalyanpur and Daliganj. Apparently, all the notes had the same serial numbers.
CMS Infosystem Limited has filed an FIR with the Vibhuti Khand police station against unidentified persons for possessing and trafficking counterfeit currency. Anil Kumar Singh, Branch Manager of CMS said, “Whoever is guilty should be punished. We will extend all help to the police and expect the matter to be resolved soon.”
Tricks To Identify False Notes?
Customers using ATMs have a habit of blindly trusting the machine and not verifying if the notes are authentic or not. Below are some guidelines given out by the RBI to check if the Rs. 2000 note your ATM just dispensed is legit or not:
- There will be a dark rectangular image on with ?2000 written on the right of the front side of the note. This will be written in raised print. Note that the front side of the note is the one with Mahatma Gandhi’s picture on it.
- On holding the white part of the note against the light, Mahatma Gandhi’s picture and the number 2000 are clearly visible.
- A security thread which shifts colour is present right beside Gandhiji’s picture. On the thread is the word ‘Bharat’ written in Hindi. This security thread changes from green to blue when the note is tilted.
- There will be 7 angular bleed lines on the left and right edges of the notes front side. These lines will also be in raised print.
- The word RBI will be written on the spectacle of Mahatma Gandhi’s spectacles in the image on the note. This will be visible with a magnifying glass.
