Huawei Mate X vs Galaxy Fold: In-Depth Comparison

Huawei Mate X and Samsung Galaxy Fold have been compared in terms of daily use, practicality, and unique features.

The Folding Design Technology

Both the foldable smartphones here use a different folding technology altogether. While the Galaxy Fold closes down in the inside, the Huawei Mate X closes like a book on the outside.

Samsung Galaxy Fold has a single screen on the outside when you fold, and a large one in the inside.

But the Huawei Mate X uses one screen on the outside in three different ways. The large screen when unfolded, and two screens on back and front when folded. It can be used as a dual-display smartphone.

While Samsung has failed here to use the technology wisely, Huawei has used the folding technology with perfection. The design is at an advanced stage.

Folding Displays

Mate X has a single huge 8-inch flexible OLED panel when unfolded. When it’s folded, you get two screens, a 6.6-inch notch-free bezel-less main display, and an additional 6.4-inch rear display. Again when you open up, it’s a rectangular bezel-free 8-inch tablet.

Coming to Samsung Galaxy Fold, it has a larger 7.3-inch Infinity Flex Dynamic AMOLED panel and a smaller 4.6-inch Super AMOLED panel when folded.

Samsung again fails in the display department. The Huawei Mate X offers an 8-inch display experience without a cutout on top. The Galaxy Fold has a smaller 7.2-inch display when unfolded with a huge cutout on the top right side for the front camera.

Folding Cameras

Huawei Mate X packs in a two-in-one front and rear camera setup powered by its signature Leica optics. Mate X combines three sensors, including a 40-megapixel wide-angle lens, 16-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens, and a third 8-megapixel telephoto sensor.

You have a mirror shooting mode with the second 6.4-inch display that lets you preview selfies on the rear display panel.

Coming to the Samsung Galaxy Fold, it has a total of six cameras. Three are at the back, two on the inside, and one on the front.

The rear triple camera setup comprises of a 16-megapixel ultra-wide f/2.2 sensor, 12-megapixel wide-angle, Dual Pixel AF and OIS sensor with variable f/1.5 to f/2.4 aperture and a third 12-megapixel telephoto sensor, again with PDAF, OIS, and an f/2.4 aperture.

The front dual camera has a primary 10-megapixel f/2.2 primary sensor with an 8-megapixel RGB depth sensor with a cover 10-megapixel selfie camera.

Folding Hardware

Huawei Mate X runs on HiSilicon Kirin 980 SoC built on a 7nm process coupled with 8GB of RAM. Huawei Mate X packs in 512GB of onboard storage, which is further expandable up to 256GB via a microSD card. On the other hand, Samsung Galaxy Fold packs in Snapdragon 855 SoC.

It includes 12GB of RAM and 512GB of inbuilt storage. In terms of processing, none of the smartphones would lack any recourse. Also, Samsung Galaxy Fold does not allow storage expandability.

5G Compatibility

Huawei Mate X comes with Balong 5000 5G chipset. It’s the world’s first 7nm modem, capable of delivering up to 4.6/ 2.5Gbps downlink and uplink speeds on Sub-6GHz. The 5G is yet to arrive, and Huawei’s got it’s latest device ready for it. The Balong 5000 chipset can deliver up to 6.5 / 3.5Gbps downlink/uplink speeds.

Huawei Mate X also sports a quad 5G antenna on the handset. Samsung is yet to add up 5G to its Galaxy Fold. The 5G Galaxy Fold is expected to release later.

Folding Software

The Huawei Mate X runs on Android 9 Pie with EMUI 9.1.1 on top. While the Samsung Galaxy Fold runs on its One UI skin, again based on the latest Android 9 Pie.

Both the foldable smartphones use a special folding UI technology for the respective responsive foldable technologies.

Folding Battery

The Huawei Mate X packs in two batteries jointly offering a total of 4,500mAh. Interestingly, it will come with 55W Huawei SuperCharge technology, the fastest in the world. It can deliver 85 percent of power in just 30 minutes of charge.

Similarly, Samsung has also packs in two batteries on two sides of the Galaxy Fold, offering a total capacity of 4,380mAh. Samsung Fold also equips fast charging and wireless charging support.

Huawei Mate X vs Galaxy Fold: Pricing

Huawei Mate X has been priced globally at EUR 2,299 (around Rs 2,09,350) for its 8GB/512GB variant. Mate X will go on sale in mid-2019 in a single Interstellar Bluecolorr option. In comparison, Samsung Galaxy Fold has been priced at $1,980 (around Rs 1,41,350).

Galaxy Fold will be available from April in Green, Blue, Silver and Black colour options with 4G LTE.

Do note, these are the global price conversions. Both Samsung and Huawei are yet to launch their foldable devices for India. So the India prices may largely vary for both Mate X and Galaxy Fold.

CONCLUSION: Huawei Mate X vs Galaxy Fold

Well, in a single sentence, Galaxy Fold does fail big against Mate X. While Galaxy Fold was utterly disappointing, the new Mate X is something you can cheer about foldable smartphones. The major difference between Samsung Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X remains in the quality of design.

While both have great power inside, a foldable smartphone is more about design and technology. And to be honest, Huawei nailed it with perfection.

Huawei has created a near-perfect foldable smartphone. Galaxy Fold has its own pros, but it can’t stand against the versatility of Huawei Mate X. Finally, coming to the price, the Huawei Mate X costs almost double the Galaxy Fold. But again it has 5G, better features and a more flexible technology.
