No More Headache As Saridon Is Back! But How Did This Happen?

The popular painkiller, Saridon, which was first made available in India by Piramal Enterprises Ltd. (PEL), had been banned for a brief period of time since September. But now, the Supreme Court has lifted the ban from the company allowing PEL to continue with the distribution.

Saridon is a heritage brand from the healthcare product portfolio of Piramal Enterprises Ltd. The tablet was listed as one of the banned fixed-dose combinations (FDCs), and now it has been exempted from the list.

Why was Saridon banned?

In September 2018, a total of 349 FDCs had been banned by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO). These included a combination of medicines like Aceclofenac+ Paracetamol+ Rabeprazole, Nimesulide + Cetirizine + Caffeine, and Paracetamol + Cetirizine + Caffeine.

The company had received a stay order from the Supreme Court after the band, which allowed the company to continue with the manufacturing, distribution, and sale of analgesic brand Saridon.

The ban on Saridon Lifted!

As per reports, the Supreme Court has finally exempted the formulation of Saridon from the list of FDCs. 

Nandini Piramal, the Executive Director of Piramal Enterprises Limited, said that she was confident that the final decision by the Supreme Court would be in the company’s favor.

“Saridon is a heritage brand trusted by customers for the last 50 years in India. This exemption from the banned list of FDCs validates our intent to serve our customers with the highest levels of integrity.”

She also said, “We continue to expand our healthcare product portfolio with an aim to be amongst the top three OTC (over-the-counter) product companies in India by 2020,” in a stock exchange filing.

Applications of Saridon

The medicine is constitutes of the following:

1. Paracetamol I.P 250 mg
2. Propyphenazone I.P 150 mg
3. Caffeine I.P (anhydrous) 50 mg

The medicine has a wide diameter of application, including back pain, body ache, and headaches as well. The tablet has a unique triple action formula and is more effective than regular ibuprofen, aspirin, and paracetamol.

The popularity of Saridon

In a study by AC Neilson, PEL has remarked that the addressable analgesic market accounts for Rs. 6450, out of which, Rs. 2050 crore is accounted for by the analgesic tablet market. These numbers have been recorded as of December 2018.

The study further says that 31 tablets of Saridon are sold every second in India.
