New Cable TV Rules: Tata Sky Offers Free Warranty For 3 years; 9 Crore Users Migrate To New Regime

Compared to DTH subscribers, Cable TV users are more open to migrating to the new rules.

Tata Sky offers free 3-years of warranty

Today is the 11th day of the new Cable TV Regulations in India, and already several major changes have been witnessed, which are directly or indirectly helping the consumers.

Now, Tata Sky has unveiled new series of offers and discounts, which will make the battle for Cable TV even more interesting.

Meanwhile, TRAI has proudly claimed 9 crore Cable TV users have already migrated to the new regime.

What does this mean? Is TRAI claiming victory?

TRAI: Free Warranty For Three Years

After removing HD Acess fees and offering regional packs at a cheap price, Tata Sky has now decided to offer absolutely free warranty on set top boxes for three years.

This offer has been launched under the new Cable TV Rules.

Here are the major announcements from Tata Sky, regarding the new rules for warranty (applicable to only new customers)

Free three years of warranty of the set top box for new subscribers
In the first year of activation of the new Tata Sky account, there will be no new material charge for replacing the set top box
No service charge for the technician’s visit to your home, in the first year.. As it is covered under warranty itself.
In the 2nd and 3rd year of warranty, there will be a charge applicable for technician’s visit to your home, for any issues.
On set top box, there will be no material charge for replacement, in the 2nd and 3rd year as well
In case the damaged set top box needs to be replaced in the first three years of the free warranty, then there shall be service visit charge as well.
However, in case the customer damages the set top box, then there will be additional charge to replace it.

TRAI has already ordered all DTH and Cable TV operators to not charge more than Rs 500 for activation of a new connection.

TRAI: 9 Crore Cable TV Users Migrated To New Regime

Meanwhile TRAI has indirectly claimed a massive victory.

TRAI Chairman RS Sharma has said that out of 17 crore cable and DTH susbcribers in India, 9 crore have migrated to the new rules, which came into force effective February 1st, 2019.

Out of 17 crore tv users, there are 10 crore Cable TV subscribers and 7 crore DTH subscribers.

Out of 9 crore who have migrated, 6.5 crore are Cable TV subscribers, and 2.5 crore DTH subscribers.

This clearly means that more Cable TV users are opting in to the new rules, rather than DTH users: Againt 35% of DTH users who have migrated to the new plans, 65% of Cable TV subscribers have opted for the Cable TV regime.

Sharma said, “The speed (of onboarding) has increased as per our data and we expect the rest of the people to also register their choice of channels soon,”

TRAI Chairman has said broadcasters are in regular touch with them, and the mission to convert all 100% of TV users into the new Cable TV Regime is underway with full force.
