In one of the biggest WiFi push in India, BSNL will roll out free, unlimited WiFi to 25 Indian cities. Under the plan, the entire city will be able to access free WiFi, without any FUP!

BSNL’s Massive WiFi Push

BSNL has partnered with telecom firm Veecon Rok, for launching city-wide WiFi service.

The initiative will be rolled out under PM Modi’s Digital India mission and will cover 25 biggest Indian cities.

And, here is the catch: For the first three months, WiFi service will be entirely free of cost, without any FUP. Charges will be required to pay, once the three-month phase is over,

Announcing this unique initiative, BSNL Chairman and MD Anupam Shrivastava said, “India has surpassed US and China in terms of data usage due to Digital India architected by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. To honour this commitment, under partnership with Veecon RoK people will get free wifi access for first three months in cities where network will be rolled out ,”

The services are expected to be rolled out starting first quarter of 2019.

Which Cities Will Get Free WiFi?

The 25 cities where free WiFi will be rolled out are:

Varanasi, Ghazipur, Vijayawada, Navi Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, , Panaji, Pune, Lucknow, Ahmedabad, Bhopal, Jaipur, Patna, Cochin, Guwahati, Tirupati, Shimla, Chandigarh, Noida, Gurugram, Dehradun, Indore and Agra.

As per some reports, the WiFi plans after free 3 months will be designed to compete against telecom players like Jio.

Who Are Veecon Rok And How Will They Provide WiFi?

Veecon Rok is a 50:50 joint venture between India’s Veecon group and US based Rok Corporation.

Veecon Rok Corporation has partnered with NASA for getting the technology behind WiFi service, and also for acquiring equipments required for the same.

The WiFi service launched by BSNL and Veecon Rok will cover street level and indoor coverage for end-users. As per Jonathan Kendrick, Co-Chairman, Veecon Rok Corporation, the company will invest Rs 36,000 crore over the next 5 years to build their own custom-made WiFi network, which will rival telecom operators.

Future Plans Of Veecon Rok and BSNL?

Starting 2019, Veecon Rok and BSNL will jointly launch Veecon ROKiT mobile handsets, which are World’s first glass-less 3D smartphones.

The company will also invest in creating 3D content for these mobile handsets, as experts from Bollywood and Hollywood will be roped in.
