Reliance Jio recently announced its much-anticipated FTTH broadband segment at the RIL AGM. The Jio GigaFiber will come with a Set Top Box (STB) called Jio GigaTV. From offering a top-notch seamless broadband service, the company will bring you Ultra-HD streaming and connectivity features to your TV.

The latest Jio offering in the form of Jio GigaFiber and Jio GigaTV will soon start to impact the multiple system operators (MSOs) and direct to home (DTH) companies.

Just like its telecom arm, the Jio broadband service is going to be a nightmare for other operators of DTH, Broadband service providers and other telecom companies.

Airtel, MTNL & BSNL Slashes Prices To Take On Jio GigaFiber

From free unlimited phone calls to extra data to no Fair Usage Policy (FUP) to free Amazon Prime subscription, companies have started to offer various offers with its broadband plans to take on Jio GigaFiber. Starting on August 15, other companies only have around a month to shuffle up their plans and offerings.

Reliance Jio will start registering for Jio GigaFiber from August 15, and looking at their past records, the company will bring in ultra-cheap disruptive Jio GigaFiber plans to take on its competition.

Jio Will Continue With Its Aggressive Pricing Plans

Reliance Jio will continue with its aggressive pricing model for market penetration. Due to wired connectivity, geographical diversity will is going to be a major limitation for Jio GigaFiber. The tariffs and service offerings is going be the deciding factor how Reliance Jio impacts the broadband and DTH and Cable TV sector.

Initially, Reliance Jio will commercially launch Jio GigaFiber in 1,100 cities across the country.

Targeting 50 Million Users

The company will follow a phased roll-out strategy for its Jio GigaFiber. Currently the company has targeted around 5 crore broadband users, about 18 percent of the total market. If Reliance Jio is able to achieve 50 million Jio GigaFiber home customers, the company can tap into a potential market of Rs 30,000 to 36,000 crore (considering Rs 500 to 600 per household).

India has only 7 percent of 290 million households with fixed broadband and 180 million TV households.

Jio DTH Services Next?

With Jio GigaFiber, Reliance Jio is also offering an add-on Jio GigaTV set top box connection. The Jio GigaTV will offer connectivity services like HD video and voice calling directly from your TV. With Jio GigaFiber, Reliance is also putting up a free Jio GigaTV connection at your home, which seems like a two-way affair.

With its broadband service, the company is putting up its Jio set top box (STB) at your home for their next up DTH service.

The company is already getting done with its last mile connectivity with putting up the connection at your home, and Reliance Jio can launch its Jio DTH service at anytime it wants. With the infrastructure ready, the Jio DTH services may launch anytime after August.

Jio GigaTV – The Foundation For Jio DTH Services?

With a Jio GigaFiber connection, the company is offering a free Jio GigaTV set-up. Jio GigaTV will offer ultra high-definition (UHD) entertainment on TV, HD video and voice calling, multi-party video conferencing, Google Assistant and Alexa support, VR gaming, digital shopping and much more.

The latest Jio GigaFiber service will come with a Jio router, a Jio GigaTV set-top box, and a fixed-line phone, smart home automation and more.

It is going be a huge opportunity for content providers to stream exclusive high-quality content via Jio DTH and cross-sell advertisements to a target segment who do not use internet, but are avid television users.

    DTH is not *necessary* any more – TV is now available on websites!! (and has been for a long time!) Even in India, channels like NDTV and ET Now transmit their feed on their sites…. Mr. Jio, are you sure you know what you’re doing, hmmmm….? :)
