250 kph: The New Standard of Intercity Trains

The niche of Intercity travel has its own importance, as passengers normally look travel between office and home, and look forward to completing such trips faster, and smoother.

However, in case of any delay, the whole schedule gets disrupted.

Understanding this problem, Indian Rail has decided to make inter-city travel faster, and better.

As per reports coming in, intercity trains will now travel with speeds of up to 250 kph, as newer rail tracks will be laid.

A ‘highly placed’ Railway source said,

“The plan is to ensure that the train reaches the destination at a time that gives the traveller enough time to attend office after reaching home.”

The plan is to make intercity travel as fast as bullet trains, which will run at 350 kph between Mumbai and Ahmedabad.

Making normal trains run at 250 kph seems expensive, but Indian Rail has devised plans to make the transformation affordable.

Reports indicate that currently, the expenditure of making high speed railway track is Rs 100 crore per km, but plans have been made to lessen this expense.

Some of the newer strategies employed by Indian Rail to cut down costs include:

  • Making single pillar tracks
  • Creating two-track corridors on top of national highways
  • Building new tracks on existing railway land

The current speed of intercity trains is 40 – 50 km/hr so a five times increase in the speed of trains is a major task that the IR is planning to achieve. Kudos to them if they are able to achieve hopefully ! Let us see when they can do it !

    Regards
